Hi everyone,

defender 90 200tdi
110000 miles
Just purchased my first defender last night.Mainly to be used as road/off road over the winter but plan on keeping it for a good while.

Dont know much about them but think I got a pretty good deal

Not sure what engine is in it will it be the 200tdi? ,1 year mot and tax.Chassis seems pretty good the tow bar brackets where they meet the chassis may need to be looked at at some point.The paintwork is in realy good condition hardly any dings or rust.

Managed to get it for £1900 they seem to be like gold dust around my area been looking for one for months with no luck.

For some reason a previous owner has painted some sort of black paint at the bottom of the doors and the back door so I will be replacing the back door and fitting some check plate on the bottoms,also want to add some off road (modular?) wheels and tyres.New steering wheel,drivers door (cracked on hinge),snorkle,and some spot lights.

looking forward to this project and giving it a facelift.

I want to put an underseal on the chassis anyone reccomend a product? also any online shops I can get a wheel and tyre package.

welcome to the mad house mate, i would forget about adding all those toys until its had a service and you've found out abit more about the engine thats init. cause yes all the added bits might make it look good but ain't no good to you if its broke down sat outside your house. if ya post a piccy of the engine it may help find out which you have got buddy, i would say it would be a 2.5td but thats just a guess really. also forget underseal for the chassis i would look into getting it waxyoled or use dinitrol both very similar, but if your unsure do a search on here and see what results other peeps have had.

one thing i find is tat 1st is quite hard to get into either end up going into 3rd or reverse,is there a nack to it or do I have a problem
 
me to just bought a 1985 90 i was told by the last owner that it was a2.5turbo diesel, now a friend of mine who runs a mot bay says he thinks its a 200tdi how can i tell which one i have

TDI has an intercooler hence the I in tdi.

mine has turbocharged intercooler stamped on the top of the black cover at the front of the engine so does that mean its not a 2.5td? and is a 200tdi?

Ya lost me. Please try to be more specific Yu could be talking about anything from a fridge to ya latest tattoo??

If it's a TDi it will have what appears to be a 2nd Radiator (Silver Alloy) next to the main Radiator (Black)
 
well you said that the 2.5td does not have and intercooler. I was thinking I had the 2.5td engine.However My engine has intercooler turbo stamped at the front of the engine on what looks like a large black cover covering the radiatior area.So my point is does this mean I have the 200tdi engine?

sorry bear with me my I dont know much about engines.
 
what would help is if someone could post a pic of a 2.5td engine and a 200tdi engine so we could see the difference.If someone can spare the time would be appreiciated.
