Does it fit exactly the same way as the steel one? My old steel one has captive nuts in it and a Philips head bolt holds the hinge to the tailgate. But the aluminium one doesn't appear to have this captive plate and the old bolts don't attach to anything in the tailgate.

Incase someone has had to drill the old bolts out has anyone got any suggestions on putting a strong thread back in the tailgate? All 4 hinge to tailgate holes are like this.

If your talking about the top tailgate and the cross head machine screws....
Most of the aly ones don't come with a nut welder inside as its a bit of a welding challenge, if memory serves me we just drilled through but could not find black cross head machine screws.
Beware they can be a bugger to fit and line up.

Best way to remove is,get the whole lot off the body by removing the 2x 9/16 nuts on the inside of the body.

Before I sold my LSE (Hi Pete) a couple of years ago I replaced the rusty steel one with ally and had a similar problem, I couldn't see how the hinges fixed to the ally frame. But I took the top rail off and found there was a steel plate about 50 x 12 x 3mm, that sat in a channel in the side frame (but could slide along) with 2 tapped holes. I had to drill out the cross head bolts and replaced them with (I think) M6 cap heads. Can't remember what make it was or whether they are all the same. Good Luck.

Well it looks like the person who took it off drilled out the bolts and so destroyed the threads. So has anyone any suggestions?

Hi Alistair,

The said tailgate is still attached and has just come back from our shoot over in Shropshire where it's been off road for arround 2 years, looks like it's going to be standing arround 12 months then it's going in the workshop for a body off re build I think.
Just working on a different LSE which is on springs, that's up for sale this time next year assuming the bos don't find any more jobs for me....
How's the P38
