hi all just brought a freelander 1.8 with problems as a bit of a project, it has a hgf, its not over heating but is boiling over, no oil in water, no water in oil. is the head gasket replacement a simple job. im going to be replacing with mls gasket with steel locating dowels. Is the head gonna need skimmed and if so what is the max that can be removed. Also the clutch is very juddery, its either fully engaged or not engaged so hard for the wife to find biting point. any help is much appreciated

no expert but if there is no oil in water or water in oil ive read on anouther forum it could be the inlet manifold o rings leaking but im sure someone will correct me as for the clutch i had a simular problem changed the clutch slave cylinder, clutch assy but the main corse was the clutch arm was seezed so realy stiff to push clutch peddle in then somtimes would stick on so stripped this down gave it a good clean grease and now all is good;)

It the engine has not overheated then the head will not have warped and should not need skimmed, just check the head surface when you remove it with a steel rule to see if its true.

Are you sure that its HGF?

On the clutch, try bleeding the hydraulic system first and check the clutch slave cylinder mount on the gearbox.

im pretty sure its hgf as there is nothing else that can cause the coolant system to become pressurised and come out of the expansion cap, with regards to the clutch it isnt heavy at all, just when going to pull away there is no bite then a few milimetres higher it engages fully and nearly stalls if your not careful

Head on my old rover 75 needed skimming even though there was no overheating, coolant system started over pressurising so repaired it straight away.

just pulled the head off, already has a mls gasket with steel locating dowels and has had a head skim, just gonna replace with mls and hope for the best, also removing the thermostat aswell, are new bolts neccesary? also am i right in thinking the torque settings are 20nm then 180 then 180 again?

you can get a head gasket from lotus for this engine its around £100 and will do the job its made of copper and is pretty thick.
the head gasket is really easy to do but dont expect any diffference using mls
