Hi Guys,
I have today just bought a xreg 2000 4.0 v8 Discovery in Green.
Love the car although i have a few questions / problems.

The 1st is the from sunroof does not work at all. and i then noticed in the little cubby above the drivers sun visor was some papers with wiring diagrams of the sunroof so it appears it wasnt working for the previous owner either!

Anyone any idea where i can start with this?

2nd. Should the clock illuminate at night with lights on or not? i noticed the drivers side temp (blue/red arrow isnt illuminating but passenger side is so just assume its a bulb gone? - how do i repace this? take the switch off?

3rd. This is my 1st 4x4 style car and i would have thought it would be quite a smooth ride with the suspension taking some of the lumps n bumps out of the road.. but the ride is really hard (reminds me of my old MR2 i had when it was lowed) what would be causing the ride to be so hard? is this normal on a land rover?

4th I know there should be 2 gear sticks, the main one (in my cars case auto geearbox) and a 2nd just infront of it which is HI - N - Low (still dont know what these do??) however my car has a 3rd gear knob. it looks aftermarket and to be honest cant see any movement in it. so i am wondering what the Hell is it for?? its positioned slightly to the right between the 2 official gear shifts.

Also i have noticed my 2nd gear shift is down (in HI) should this be or should it be in N ? if so how do i change it? i have no book with the car.

Also i have 3 keys 2 remote keys and one ignition key.. neither of the remote keys will fit in the ignition (they will lock/unlock the car ) but thats it.. only the ignition key will start the car.. taking a closer look i think the key cuts are different :( any ideas?

If someone could please help me with the above i would be v greatful. Im just feeling a bit gutted after discovering this list of issues :( other than that its a lovely car tho.

Thanks

Grant

!st, pls bear with me as i'm american, that being said, the issue that I'm comfortable with is the gearbox/transfer case.

the short factory lever in front of the gearshift is the hi/low for the transfer case.
while rolling slowly (less than 10 kph), shift the transmission to neutral, immediately shift the transfer case to hi or low (do not stop that lever in neutral).

If it's in low she'll pull like clydesdales (good offroad)(not good onroad)

2nd, around 2000, land rover did away with the center difflock on the transfer case (crazy) they actually just left out the linkage.

Over here, in the states, we commonly make our own. if that thing has a handle try turning it (as you would a wrench) while your driving (any speed) - do not drive on pavement with the lock engaged as you will eventually break something if you turn. (you'll feel it trying to go straight) the lock is only for offroad (snow, mud, loose dirt)

Do a search on - CDL lock - or - stuck cdl - to find out more, it's really common

OH, and the stiffness is probably the shocks, depending on the brand. bilsteins are stiff, monroe sensatraks are much softer (& cheaper)
I don't know what you might use over there

luck,greg

congrats on your purchase.. being an x reg there's a chance it's a late reg'd disco 1 or more likely it's a disco 2.. do you know which?

it sounds like at some point it's had a new ignition barrel.. judging by the fact that both keys I got with mine were aftermarket copies and one of them has since snapped i presume keys snapping in the ignition is fairly common.. so posibly that is why..

my clock doesn't work at all..

HI is right for the second gear stick, I've no idea about the other one.

I feel every bump in the road as well but it doesn't feel like a sporty ride.. I believe the discovery 2 was a different sussy set up though so could be different to mine.. but who knows what might have been done to the shocks etc by previous owners..

sunroof.. get a copy of the RAVE cd and work through it

welcome here anyway.. great place but be prepared for some ribbing.. and probably better to put each job in a new thread but wait till you come to start doing it.. it's busy here and trying to keep track can be hard work..

i found out today the 3rd stick is an aftermarket thing, im just trying to remember what it does. he said he was stuck in wet grass so got this fitted. does somethign with turning all 4 wheels slip or something?
he said there are 2 version electronic or manual and this is the manual version you just twist the knob 90 degrees anyone shed anymore light on it?

also the lock barrel was changed £240 to get a new one with to match keys. i Do have 2 BIG problems now.

1st the fuel guage is now stuck.. can someone advise what i can do. (no dealers will touch the car as its got LPG)

also the sunroof doesnt work. prev owener told me its been disconnected as it had a problem where it would open but intermittently not close.. he was told something to do it solder joint on the control module??

can anyone help? (the fuel guage being main one as i broke down on the M6 today after running out of fuel) :(

3rd lever sounds like a rear diff locker. Landies only have a centre diff lock that doesn't lock the axle diffs. So the wheels will spin on slippery surfaces. People get round this by fitting a diff locker to the rear axles diff.

I am in the same boat as you, having just bought a 4.0 2001 disco II. my sunroof doesnt work either. from previous experience with landrover sunroofs, i recommend forgetting its there. dont try and mess with it, you will think its fixed, then one day you will have it open and it will start to rain and it wont close. the first place to look for the fuel guage problem is the wire on the tank sender, its probably corroded and/or fallen off.

Did you read my post above about difflocks?

Hi Greg, yep just read it and you were spot on. Although to be honest i dont think i would ever use it.. im wondering to keep it or not.. would it be easy to remove? are those kits expensive?

JPV8 > where abouts is the wire to check is it something i can do? does the car need to be on ramps or jacked up ??
