Kung Fu Chicken

Hi guys,
had the beastie out for a good run to see if the over heating issue was sorted and on that score things all seem good 150 miles with no fan on and not a flicker from the needle.
However on the outward leg had to go up a sizable hill(Birdlip on the A417) was going ok till i hit the hill and by half way up had to go down to third at 40mph, is this normal? just i thought these things pulled like trains. could you give mw any pointers as to where to look if there is a problem?
and finally im pretty sure ive sprung an oil leak from the gearbox at motorway speed around 70 there were a lot of vibes and a continous whine, but as soon as i back off the throtle whine and vibes gone, so my question is are there any usual suspects on the box where i can start my search.

Cheers guys

Oh and the overheating problem was the rad being four, fithes chocked with clay, i now have enough clay for a dinner service!!!

Could well be diff whine, not gearbox. On overrun the diff engages the other side of the teeth, whine disappears.

Does it vary in sound depending on gear?

Also big wheels and tyres make a huge difference, rolling resistance and gearing alterations.

Cheers

as above with tyre size , mine is on 235,70,16 and pulls up most hils at 70+ my mate has 275,70,16 and will bearly pull 5th on the flat and is down to sub 60mph on hills in
4th or even 3rd on steep hills

also if you have bigger tyrs the spedo will read slower , try it with a **** nav for more acurate speed

hi, as soon as i back off the gas the whine and the vibes go it does seem to be worse in higher gears 4th and 5th
Cheers so far, any thoughts on where to look for this leak?

i went up birdlip hill friday with 235/70/16 on and got up at about 60 with a lot of junk in the car, today with 265/75/16 i was struggeling and at about 45/50 but i have the pump turned up as well

Tyres that much bigger will affect your gearing quite a bit and it will also throw out your speedo by about 10%.

yeah i was just using it as a base for kung fu chicken to relate to. with the big tyres my speedo actualy reads correct :D used the satnav to comapre

Do the vibes make the steering wheel wobble?

If yes, then it can be wheel balance or pressure, swivel pre-load, loose steering geometry. Check these, do a search on threads, it's a common prob.

Oil leak; wash down where you can, check between mainbox and transfer box for leak. Also check drain plugs, they may be loose or if you've off-roaded you could have ****ted it / 'em on some thing hard.

It's most likely to be a diff then if the noise changes.

If your car has a diff lock transfer case, you can tr driving it with a prop removed to find which one is noisy.

hi, i dont have diff locks so that my be a bit of a problem to your test noisey, the vibes i could feel were through the seat and gear shift so dont recon on wheels out of balance, plus they were a faster vibe if that makes sense, could the cause be low oil level? had a look in the day light and there is a bit of a mess on the transfur box which box has the red colored oil in as im sure read on here that the gearbox and transfur box use diffrent oils is that correct?
Cheers so far chaps
