I covered mine up with a plastic sheet and it still got a bit wet. I think I need to sit in the boot with a cup of coffee next time it rains and see where it's coming from.

On a client's bmx X5 it was coming from the body roof joint above that boot area. That is also on the list for this L322 here.

Mine has a very random water in boot issue. Previous threads suggested the seals around the bumper mounts on the outside as a failure there is straight into the tyre well. I have stopped using hand car washes and also no jet washer lance aiming at the gap between bumper and lower tailgate. It seems to be working where puddles are concerned but the damp still gets in. So pillows in boot by the tech stuff, a sausage by the spare wheel and a pillow in the glovebox with the cover off the fuses.
Pillows microwaved every time the dot goes pink.
Tricky

Take a close look at the where the trim for the quarter light meets the body. My sealant? was completely gone. I could put my finger inside the car from outside, through gap. Was hard to see until I accidently pressed on the unit, whilst searching for gap Resealed with clear sealant . photostudio_1605205361370.jpg

Do you have to wait till the sausage goes limp?

Take everything out, yeah I know, carpets the lot ... dust with talc, gently close tailgate / boot ...

Run a hose over the area, paying attention to the roof to side seams, hinges, fitment holes, (rails, aerial etc.) vary the power of jet as it would while driving in rain and also get around lights and bumper areas, (through bolts and such like) ...

Slowly open boot as this may flex panels etc. see if any tracks have been left through the talc to help pin point ingress areas ...

Can't I just Karcher the crap out of it instead... Instant in-car swimming pool in the wheel well. with tinted glass:D
