rattle gun your a gent, thanks for posting the extra info.. I have set timing to 6DBTDC with a strobe so as you say I can move dizzy to compensate for a tooth out..I just don't like it popping up when I try to adjust timing with engine running.

is your first pic showing the skew gear with the small adaptor piece sitting on top or have you removed adaptor?

Thanks for all your postings, a glass of red has made things clearer..
I will attack it in the morning, dies the grub screw need loctite? if it's going to take a while to line up skew gear brass casing won't the loctite set?

No worries dude. The pic shows it with adapter in place, and you can see the splines of the drive gear underneath it. The master spline is hard to see and you wouldn't notice unless you really look, it's just a wider space between 2 teeth on the internal part of that skew gear, as shown in the left hand Haynes pic.

if screw is quite loose ,you cant fit grub screw till youve aligned hole in brass bush , i walk it round with a pointed screw driver whilst lifting skew gear slightly with another after getting the gear in the right tooth first

attacked it this morning chaps,

TDC on timing mark of front pulley, dizzy off and master spline is pointing to white spot marked on dizzy clamp:

guess what-no retaining screw holding gear in!! :

all I need to do now is order a grub screw and filter housing gasket..any ideas?!

so the bush screw is t shown in the old land rover parts catalogue... I'm screwed!!!!

anyone help?

try erc8976

cheers James,

I just placed order and randomly selected a few screws and this was one of them!

I didn't lose any oil taking filter off-I tied some string around housing and let it dangle-hardest thing was scraping old gasket off-it had set like concrete!

well I got it all back together today chaps.
I used my usb inspection camera to good effect:

it's perfectly in hole:

Skew gear in but won't go down low enough!!

bodge uncovered, the PO obviously could line screw up so they left it out and stuffed some cardboard and a nut inside gear to make it stand off the correct height!! FML!!!

So, in order to hold gear up while you put screw in I used some mole grips and a ratchet handle, turned gear anticlockwise so it rises on gear teeth and wedge it in place once the hole lines up:

hole lines up ready to put retaining screw in:

now it's all back together it won't start...grrr
coil is snap snap cracking away nicely but not firing..

keep getting pops through the carb into air filter...
black smoke puffing gently out exhaust as it's cranking ..

what's gives??
I checked dizzy at TDC and rotor arm points nicely to no.1 spark plug

any ideas?

but are they pointing at no 1 with valves in correct sequence

without me running the risk of sounding too wet can you elaborate please James? :)

I put crank at TDC to timing mark and rotor arm points to no.1 plug ok.

I haven't taken cover off to check valves...u was going to check clearances after I got it running again-I didn't want to do too much at once you see so that I could retrace my steps if it didn't start...

tdc can be at 2 places on no1 right with both valves closed (rocker arms free to rock a little) 180 degrees out on cam with both slightly open (rockers both have pressure on them )if it is it would either need skew gear refitting right or leads swapping ie 1 become 4 etc

I see, cheers James..I'm guessing it won't hurt swapping leads...can't be arsed to take it all apart again now :0)

thanks again

Hi James,
so no1 being closest-does it go exhaust then inlet?

can you explain from pic what I should look for to get TDC please?

did it, I rotated skew gear 180 degrees.. I made sure no.1 cyl was at top of compression stroke with inlet and outlet closed with timing mark on crank lined up... hope that's right-video to follow if you can check please guys....
