Good evening hive mind,

i've noticed a bit of juddering when coming to a stop in my 1997 110 defender van, feels like somethings holding back if that makes sense. this is without brakes on and with the car in neutral you can feel a juddering as if the engine was stalling when slowly rolling to a stop. some times it seems worse than others.
car drives well on the road with no bad noises or anything.

i'm going to have a poke around underneath at the weekend but any areas to focus on, e.g. diff play, TF box, front CV/Swivels, suspension joints etc.?? and any guidance on proving them, wheels up, out of gear etc.

cheers in advance

Steve

If it's doing it in neutral I would start with the transmission areas.
Get it up on axle stands and check it for free movement.
Could be various things

lt's just had a new cable fitted. Likely it needs some adjustment.

How far do you have to pull the handbrake up before it starts to engage (try it at low speed)
You should have at least one "click" before it starts to engage

yeah it takes about 3 to 4 clicks but it doesn't feel as positive as it did before it snapped, always feels like you need to get the final click for it to hold on a hill. i'll check that its actually releasing properly tomorrow

l had an aftermarket handbrake cable on my TD5 and it was crap. lt wasn't smooth and eventually snapped.

But it did work. You could remove the prop shaft and see if the hand brake drum is free to rotate.

Trans brakes have way more than a regualr cars 2/3 clicks before they start to work, people always over adjust the cable, which is fine until things warm up.

We had about 5 clicks on our 2A before it would hold on a hill, couldn't get it any different, bleddy thing

Well, so long as it worked.

On my new Defender the "handbrake" is a button that you push. lt works great but what if it doesn't? No chance of "adjustment" or repair with a couple of 1/2" spanners and a cross head screwdriver.

thats what makes me think its the handbrake as it seems worse when i've driven for a while. going to check it today once it warms up a bit🥶

well adjusted it today, so i'll give it a test drive tomorrow. noticed a lot of play in the rear diff so that'll be next on the agenda!!

What way did you adjust it?

Dont worry we all have slack ;).

J
turned the adjuster until it dragged and then backed it off slightly and tested the cable. fingers crossed..

i had a look at this video on youtube and it showed the same behaviour so it may well be the halfshaft ends at the wheel end that are worn. another job for another day!!

you guys are miracle workers, took the truck for a test drive, no dragging, no juddering on slowing down for junctions and the handbrake works a treat on a hill. checked the drum when i got back and its not hot so i know its not dragging.
i was worried it would be something expensive but the only expense was my time and they are the fixes i love!

thanks for everyones help and input. very much obliged!!

Steve
