my FREElander is juddering. Once in gear it is fine, but especially at low speeds, it is horrible.
It started like this when I was reversing the caravan.. a few tight locks, next thing, horrible clutch burning smell.
I was hoping it was the VCU side of things, so I removed the prop shaft. It is still nasty. It didn't solve it.
Any Ideas?

Ah sorry.. I do quite like it actually, and am looking for a repair. Was hoping to get a bit of advice, and lead me in the right direction.
I am suspecting the clutch, but it has no sign of slipping, just the judder.
 
It does sound like the clutch, I paid about £350 to get mine done. I have a petrol, I don't know what price a diesel would be.
 
in fairness the clutch on the Freelander doesnt look to be a bad job... theres plenty of room to work the IRD comes off easy dont forget if its the later TD4 they have a dual mass flywheel which is also best to replace at the same time you can change that to single mass if you want as its your car your choice but i would not leave the old on in...

l series not sure if they have a dual mass but i dont think they do
 
Cost does depend on engine type and who does it. If it's a 1.8 petrol or L series diesel then make sure the clutch release lever is free to move, but often the release bearing can't slide freely on the gearbox nose because the grease has dried out. The lower tie bar bush failing can also cause judder ;)

2001 TD4 softback by the way.
I phone a clutch centre and they said they would do it for £400 ish. I havent got any quotes from local firms yet, and not likely to now for the next two weeks as I am away.
The dual mass flywheel I gather is about £500. The single conversion I saw on ebay £285. I think I may be tempted to leave it as it is. Hopefully with fingers crossed get no problems with that?
Any mechanics here fancy doing a clutch job and beating the above quote?

You must do the dmf at the same time as the clutch! The dmf is designed to last a few thousand miles more than the clutch so if it's retained it will fail long before the new clutch.
There is a solid flywheel alternative but it must have the correct clutch plate to go with the flywheel or problems may appear soon after.

had to have mine replaced back in march £1385 at a l/r specialist:jaw:, that hurt:Cry::Cry::Cry:........
 
How about the same judder in a 1.8? Clutch replaced a couple of months ago and judders like a bastard when warm and pulling away in 1st.

Our W-reg 1.8 petrol (54,000 miles) has the same issue - particularly in hot weather or under load - hill starts with four people plus luggage are the worst

That's a common PG1 gearbox issue.
It's caused by the clutch friction splines sticking to the first motion shaft, or the release bearing sticking on the slide tube.
The only real cure is to strip out the box, replace the clutch, and correctly lubricating the assembly when it's put back together. ;)
