Hello,

I'm frantically trying to prepare my vehicle for a trip to Morroco at the start of September and was wondering if anyone has got any ideas for mounting Jerry cans to a roof rack. I've seen some dual jerry can holders but they are quite pricey. Anyone got some that they can recommend?
 
What about making your own custom box, that way you could build it to carry as many as you want.

I was hoping there was something that good fit on the spare wheel, I've seen pictures on google but no places to buy them :(

Not convinced personally. 20 litre can full of fuel is going to be the best part of 20kg weight, making for a very heavy door and very strained hinges. Also, a piece of cake to drain whilst just loitering, rather than clambering up to the roof. definitely not a recommendation for petrol rather than diesel, Ford Pinto springs to mind.

Mind you, there is a limit to what can be placed on the roof too, IIRC it's around 75-100kg, and a good rack will take up a big slice of that weight. Decent rack, an extra spare tyre & wheel, two cans of fuel and that is probably about the lot
 
Having done a trip across Morocco I personally wouldn't carry Jerry cans on the roof rack. We kept all the heavy stuff inside the vehicle and things like table and chairs on the roof rack. Carrying all that weight on the roof rack you will end up getting sea sick with all the rolling about, especially if you go through sand dunes.
 
Yeah I was worried about the roof as with the lift, new tyres and what not it's already quite lofty and was looking to keep things low for a a better center of gravity.

Might get a LR fuel tank but it's more cost :(
 
Personally I wouldn't have bothered with the lift. A P38 in our group had a 2" inch lift. They had fitted Terrafirma springs and shocks, all new before the trip. They broke a shock and the general consensus was the only thing the 2" inch lift did was to enable them to sink 2" inches deeper when they got stuck. They did say they wouldn't do it again. Don't know what route your taking, I had four 20 liter Jerry cans which we didn't use. I only ended up using the fuel on the back in Spain as fuel is cheap in Morocco. We had over kill on the amount of stuff we took. We all said we would be much wiser next time round. Much to my surprise my Defender averaged between 30 to 35 mpg in the desert. I was assuming it would do much less but it seems due to not reaching high speeds it didn't consume much. The other vehicles in the group were the same. None of us had to use our Jerry can supplies.

im currently working out why it seems
I only get 15mpg on uk motorways so I probably need jerry cans ha ha. Yeah read the blog and stole some ideas from it :), really interesting.
