Hi, I was wondering what the pros and cons are of a jap import disco 1? Anything I should know about?

Regards reload

less rust, ive seen some pretty ,the vehicle is identical to uk ,dont know how insurance react probably load premium a bit

I have had no prob with insurance, and its in great condition and on 64k so not bad for a 98 300.
Just wondering if there was any other quirks to be aware of.

I guess just the speedo conversion, I presume it's digital on a disco 1, so just a little chip off ebay. and the usual installation of a rear fog light

Different style of exhaust system due to Jananese vehicle emmissions rules so just replace with a UK spec if or when the time comes, also radio frequencys dont work in the UK and they have transmission/ignition key inter-locks, speedo is KMPH but with a MPH also shown.

They usually cost disproportionately more to purchase, than a UK one and you would have difficulty importing it into another European country, because it's not european market spec. Some sellers are asking £6-8000 for a 97 TDI 300 !!!!!!

Radio, exhaust, EGR valve and speedo are different. Spec level is different also.

The advantage is lower rust supposedly. Some sellers also speak of better service history, but if it does come with the car it'll be in Japanese so I'm not sure how that helps!!!!

Mine is fairly rust free, has different passenger dash speedo in mph! Is a lower spec auto, no leather seats, sunroof etc.
it's a bit gutless but that's the auto I should think!
Is r plate and got it for 2k with 64k on clock.

This isnt meant as a joke but surely theres gonna be a few less rust free examples for sale after that tsunami.

You're right but I bet the grey importers still call them "rust free" Japanese imports and charge a bundle for them!!!

yep they jet wash em and send em over, then the salt in the chassis box sections slowly starts to eat them from the inside.

With the added bonus, they glow in the dark. ;):D

You wont be able to drive it in the LEZ if its registered as a utility vehicle

dredging this fred back up...
has anyone else had a problem with current LEZ on an imported disco,
re the taxation class or registered class of use....

got to change my old disco some time in the future so need it to be LEZ compliant...

One thing no one has mentioned is rust proofing, I have a Japanese import and it has no rust protection at all, so you need to budget that it too

You wont be able to re-register it as an estate or anything else my mate had one and he tried for weeks to change it and got nowhere

I can and have in mine, just check the logbook to see how it was registered when it came over.

As for changes, it just seems there some odd stuff on the Jap ones but I also think they are on the later UK ones as well, like.

Cooled EGR
Relay locking the Auto Box
Half leather seats
Speedo

I got mine with 42k miles (now 67) and very very little rust on it.
