Can anyone points me towards or shed some light on twin turbo conversions done by janspeed on range rovers.

A friend of mine has today bought a second range rover which is a 1983 v8 carb model in black. The chap he purchased it from is the second owner and has had it since 1988.

The vehicle is fitted with full janspeed stainless exhaust, twin turbos (now removed), spax adjustable suspension, 4" lift, front and rear anti roll bars, in dash janspeed boost gauge, janspeed turbo decals on front wings, and a janspeed identity plate on the front slam panel. The owner belivese this is all part of an original £12k conversion carried out by janspeed when the vehicle was new.

Pictures will follow when we collect it on Friday, in the meantime would be interested in any information on this conversion particualrly with regard what was included and what turbos were used!

Hi

Simply call Janspeed quote the Chassis/Engine numbers and they should be like OverFinch and give you details of what was fitted in regard to Turbochargers.

Definitely a janspeed. Well to the best of my knowledge anyway. It has janspeed turbo badges on the wings. Janspeed serial number plate on the bulkhead and a janspeed boost gauge.

Its certainly not an overfinch.

Dont think the wheels were originally painted as they look hand painted. Did they have those three spokes in 1983?

Rang Janspeed today and they were as helpful as a chocolate tea pot.

Don't think the 3 spoke alloys were out in 83 think they came later with the SE Vogue in around 86 ish (plus or minus a couple of years)

Well I thankyou. I don't know everything (As today had a glued together bolt in my inlet manifold which snapped I have no idea on extraction of threads) (Yes some people will glue bolts together. I seem to be the only one finding them)

To extract a nut, firstly, find an idiot:D Seriously, if you can drill a fine hole and then bigger and bigger until its close to the size of the stud the you get a tap with plenty threading past and gently, yes I said gently start re-tapping remembering this is cast, its as simply as that, yeah right, the best of British my dear;););)

Got it done all running nicely now (oh with the exception of a knock somewhere in the suspension when I turn right or brake slowly)

This knock may be the disc on that side slightly warped or possably the cv joint may be suspect:confused: I have no doubt you will cure it. One you have finished with playtime are you going greenlaning in the broads.

I found the knock today some (explitive, explitive, explitive, swear words) had undone my wheel nuts on one wheel causing the wheel to start to detach.

Green laning in the broads sounds great (didn't know there were green lanes in the broads)

Fancy you not knowing about the greenlanes at your end, the are a touch different to ours:p the green is the colour of water running in them and you would need a periscope attached to the beast along with a snorkel

Well we got it up on the ramp last week and found the chassis to be in fantastic condition despite its age and the fact its been sitting nearly a year. There some corrosion to the front footwells particularly nearside and in the boot where the floor meets the inner wing around the fuel filler neck. Otherwise apart from a repair to the sills which could have been neater. It seems very solid and so was put straight forward for MoT.

Failure was limited to headlampalignment, wiper blade, rear brake frlexi hose corroded, front brake balance (pulls slightly so presumably one calliper still sticking a bit)and to body to chassis mounts.

The dilema he has now is what to do with it. Considering its rareity and condition he doesnt want to modify it for off road use as originally intended, but cant afford to restore it to its former glory and source the turbos.

Anyway first thing is to get it moted and then decide.

Why don't you get standard exhaust manifolds (it will be cheaper than Turbos also you would need the Turbochargers balanced/matched if they were to be paired)

Welding should'nt be that expensive and the brake hose can be bought from

Headlight allignment is fairly cheap arounds £35
Wiper blades around £12
Piston around £7
Piston seal kit around £12

Its on standard four branch manifold atm. (well not exactly std but you know)

I will do welding and alignment for nick thats no problem. Wipers are done.

Thats a very good price for brake hose though may have to ring paddocks on monday for a price on exhaust and speedo cable for my series!

I was just googling for Janspeed Range Rovers and came across this forum!

I recently bought a 1990 3.9EFI with Janspeed conversion. It was an MoT failure but on Saturday I finally got it all fixed and back together (apart from the back box/ tail pipe - it really sounds nice without it, but I must assemble them for the MoT!!!

Anyway, I'm sorry but I have little time at present, I will write again soon. My research with Janspeed indicates that they produced around 100ish twin turbos on the 3.5 carb engines (nicknamed "Slone Rangers" apparently). They had problems developing the injected-engine version, but produced only about 25 with a single large turbo (Garrett M25). Most of both versions were exported to South Africa where there are lots of long straight roads. The guy I bought mine from thought there are only 3 single-turbo versions in the UK.

More later, guys, I have to go eat little cars around the M25!!!!

HI! imyself have a single turbo V8 engine for my SD1. It is a rotomaster turbo and janspeed embossed on the plenum chamber. www.chevrolets1.com/rover_v8.html sell V8 turbo manifolds. I intend to fit mine soon! Haynes have a rover V8 tuning guide covering twin turbos *essential!!...if you require details about the turbo system. I seen mine in halfords. get down and order it.....Google is worthwhile for sourcing info ...just search under rover V8 turbo. A triumph TR8 sporting a twin turbo was rated at 500HP.. keep at it!!!

Interested in your conversion. I had already come across the Boost Performance website and their excellent £200 turbo manifolds. I sometimes dream of 500bhp under a Range Rover bonnet - a great deal cheaper than buying the new RR Sport!

I had the Janspeed machine working and street legal. It goes like a bat out of hell and is a vast improvement over the stock Classic 3.9EFI powerplant. It pulls like a train all the way up to 125mph, although there are a still a few problems.

First, it starts to pink at anythng over 110mph, getting progressively worse as the speed increases (which it does, despite the pinking!!)

Secondly, and I suspect this is part of the same problem, the engine termperature starts to go off the roof. I held it at 115mph for under 5 minutes when it explosively boiled over and dumped all it coolant in the engine bay - an interesting experience being enveloped by steam and super-heated water at 100mph on the M25. Also it cost me £110 to be low-loaded home!

But, apart from the high-speed issues, the car is brilliant for everyday driving and can sustain 90-95mph all day long. I have done some rough timings and it will do 0-60mph in a little over 6 seconds, although it pinks at high revs still. Not bad for an automatic!! It is certainly great fun. In dry dock for the winter but now that you have remineed me about how good it is to drive I must charge up the battery, pump up the tyres and get it going again over Xmas.

I was wondering about doing a twin-turbo conversion. Apparently 2 turbos from diesel Land Rovers are about right, and quite easily and cheaply available. But I seem to have moved on - I bought a small, old yacht on ebay in September and that takes most of my spare time now!!
