hello im brock from the derv burning dark side, but today i heard something that has made me want to change my coal burning ways.

twas a 4.2 v8 in a 110 on staight pipes ;)

so its gotta be done, whats my best bet? i want to keep it simple dont wants ecus and electrical crap. does that limit me to the 3.5 and 3.9?

Any v8 can be built to run carbs or efi. Size makes no difference.

My advice would be to fit a 3.5 efi out of an old disco.

Buy a scrapper and you've got all you need.

I say this because I know how darn reliable the Hotwire injection system is. And I prefer the small bore block, but I've been told by a few folk the 3.9 is fine too, although I can't see it 100% cos they always pop gaskets!

You must run a Y or H pipe exhaust, and don't run it on ****ing lpg!

afaik dual pipes are good for top end power, but due to it being a cross plane crank at low revs the manifold flow are uneven/irregular.

you probably know more about it than me though, but thats what ive gathered.

they do sound better without a cross pipe i reckon, you get a more defined 'bum bum bum' sound at low revs!
 
I run a 4.2 in my hotrod out of a 91/2 Lse range rover. runs a Edelbrock carb as the old 3.5 was was a carb one has Twin exhaust without a balance pipe runs fine but agree that they sound different with one. If you build it right and sort the cooling properly they don't get hot and do the head gaskets in every 5 mins! Also Lpg gets a lot of stick, if the cooling is good and the system is ok it should be ok. My 4.6 p38 has had it since it was 3 years old its now 14! And done 120k. Same engine.
 
I prefer a twin exit to a single exit on the land rover. Going to redo mine so I get twin pipes after the Y section.

Funny how so many rave about ripping out the V8 to replace with a doozal, for whatever reasons.......but there's always those that think 'fook it' I'm not a farmer, lets have a V8 :D

got me sed a 4.2, want to flop some carbs on it when it comes what are my options?

Are you planning to stay on the flat level driving, and dont mind flatspots when you give it the loud pedal?

Would stay with EFi personally
 
those 4 barrel carbs are no good offroad as we have covered many times

I did think though if your running lpg they will be ok as your only on the petrol first start then they should be fine running on gas off road
 
or may have a play with some su's. will have to just have a play when i get the engine.

Defo Efi in my opinion. I've never run carbs but I do know how simple and reliable efi is and that it's very suitable to off road use. Carbs are a bit of a mystery for me though, a carb man might be quite happy!

What needles do I need to make a 3.9i run nice on 2 SU's because I'm fecked if I'm going to get my 3.9 to run well on std SU's from a 3.5! Sure it'll run but not be right and the selection of needles are massive. Getting it rolling roaded each time I cnhange needles will cost a bomb.
