It's a Warn M8000, cost £60 plus lots of fettling and a £69 motor from ebay, hence the white sealant! Right now the motor has a broken post so needs some work, but it's been pretty good so worth persevering with. The synthetic rope was second hand £30, is only about 15metres long, but is a 'proper' 12mm decent rope. Feels gorgeous when washed!

I 'acquired' the steel, over-ordered for something else, so made the bumper ends and welded it altogether. I found the tow hitch .. We don't have much money so most of the bits on the 90 are home-made .. but mostly stronger for it and definitely fit for purpose!!

The original wire rope from the winch is in great condition, in my shed, but I'm teaching myself wire rope splicing so at some point I'll make it into a decent extension with proper loops or hooks and master link at each end. I did it with the synthetic rope, don't see why I can't with wire!! ;)

I'd like a larger winch and longer rope, but I've never actually had a problem with it yet .. ;)

I used to splice wire rope together when I worked at Whitecross wire ropes in Warrington. It was to feed continuous strands into the rope machine when making large ropes like the ones for ships
Not very good at it now though:)

My fairey pto winch has 4 bolts that also secure it to the front crossmember, Only thing I dont like about it is if the wire rope breaks its goodbye radiator!

My dad has a fairy winch on his S1 - the plate on his is only 6mm though.. mines 12. I still agree that it's be worth doing those bolts up though... better than pulling my winch off in the middle of a forest haha

nice odea but the standard bumper is **** thin so I would be concerned about twisting and bending that, also if your wire doesnt spool in perfectly it will wreck your rad, you point about mounting it on the rear isnt that stupid as if your stuck why pull yourself further in? if its on the rear you can just pull back out of the mud

Winch is far enough away from my rad not to ruin it. My winch has the bars across the top that will get hit by the cable before it reaches my radiator.

And that was my original trail of thought - pull myself out the way I went in! Ahh well too late now! Its a very good excuse to justify buying another winch now though!! :D

use rope instead of wire, it doesnt store kinetic energy so no backlash if snapped

That's the long term plan! I'm just restricted by funds at the moment. Rope is also much lighter so when unreeling it doesn't take so much effort! :p My mrs is gonna moan when she has to drag my cable winch across some mud to a tree! :D:D

I made my own using an old (nackered) bumper with a decent tray and 6mm sheet steel .. It only sticks out about 2", maybe less, than the standard bumper .. and I didn't have to cut the grille .. ;)

That's nice mate - You've kept it tight to the front still! But as we all know, those extra 2 inches can be what makes the difference... ;) haha

All these winch bumpers.

I modified a tubular one with homemade plate. Its being changed back to a Std bumper. It amazes me how many bumpers you pay good money for that give you more front overhang. My new one will be very similar to the OP's however I will try to get it behind the actual bumper instead of on top of it.

This was my issue. I couldn't find any that didn't stick out more that standard bumper. I've had to cut the grille on mine, but in my eyes it was worth it to keep my approach angle. I think I'd catch my winch all the time if it stuck out any more! :p

Quick question mate - From the picture I guess the winch is mounted to the tray, which has been made into the bumper, and then bolted through standard bumper mounts. Have you done anything else to secure it, or do you think that this is enough? I'm not sure whether to add more fixings to mine... Cheers!

No, that's it!

The winch plate is all 6mm, including the bumper plates which are the same plate really. The bolts are 12.9 High tensile and it all fits tightly so no movement. It's pulled the 90 almost vertically and out of 3' mud a few times so I reckon it's fine .. ;)

The actual extra 2" it sticks out I haven't found an issue at all, except on tight turns when it has (well, the hook) caught once on a wall, for instance, but as for breakover angle, I reckon the 2" lift negates it .. Certainly, with the 'wings' of the bumper angled back it looks much worse than it is, but the ends are about 3" further back than standard and about 3" higher, so it really is only the centre that sticks out.

Nice! You have instilled some confidence in my own design! I should probably swap my bolts for high tensile though, only had 8.8s at work.... :p Standard ones from the bumper are 8.8 but I managed to bend a couple being snatched out of a mud hole at Slindon Safari using only one D-ring... But I decided that as there won't be any impact loading on the bolts, only a gradual increase from the winch, that I would probably be alright... :p:D Have you got 10mm or 12mm bolts?

heres my very snug winch

I wanted one for my 8274 +3' but couldn't find one I like, mostly the over hang, I bought a winch tray from gwyn Lewis and butchered my lowline winch bumper

That would be a capstan type fairey winch, mine is the drum version same as a Superwinch except with different alloy housings.
I think the capstan was supported on the front crossmember with 4 rivnuts which as you know arent the most manly things in the world.

That's the one!
I made the plate up for his also - he had a design already though, and we made it out of 6mm, just a flat plate but it's bolted down in all sorts of places. Got outselves stuck using it last time we went out (before I installed my winch!)

Had the s1 strapped to a tree at the back, and then snatch blocked at 90degrees to the back of my 90... When our winch/rope man was pulling the rope he somhow got it tangled around itself, so we couldn't un-tension it at all.
And I couldn't drive backward, as was still stuck. So we've got the rope tensioned right up with no way of getting any slack, to get the rope off the winch!! After some deliberation and discussion we voted to cut the strop around the tree - dangerous I know, but we decided it was the safest option. We got lots of heavy logs sat in the strop, and with one clean slice cut ourselves free.
Quiet a tense moment, but we got ourselves out - lessons where learnt!! :D

This is mine. No mods to the grille or rad required :D

It has a Husky Superwinch fitted.

That's mud not rust on the bumper btw.

See I like that you haven't cut the grille - but for me sitting it back just those extra few cms by cutting the grille is worth it for not loosing my approach angle - however it still broke my heart cutting the landrover up - I've still got the bits I cut off, might mount them on my wall hahaha :D

The light protectors were on it when I bought it. So no idea tbh. They are galvanised so I assume they were bought.
