As always your help and advice is needed once again…

This is my 1 petrol landy in over 20 years and my 1st engine change.. And what a learning curve it’s been :)

So the engine a Ex Army 5 bearing 2.25 petrol seems to be a good one. When everything is running it’s great. I have fitted new clutch, fuel pump, plugs, leads and weber carb. The electronic ignition was new on the old engine so I’ve moved it across but have fitted a new sports coil...
Today i managed to drive round the block but it cut out as i drove up to the garage… and wouldnt start…. This has been the case for a week or so and I’m running out of ideas on what to try next. All i have left is to feed the coil direct from the battery to rule out the original loom.

Any help and advice would be great….

Ide also like views and comments on a video i recorded of the carb after 3 or 4 seconds of cranking but not starting…. I have sent an e-mail to the supplier and awaiting comments, but should it sound and look like a witches couldron ???

The big stand out for me is your electronic ignition. Are you sure its set up properly. Do you have a conventional ignition set up you could try? That and how it's interacting with the carb.
 
hiya mate ,i fitted the weber to mine over a year ago, have u set up as per intructions, cos my volume screw is all but wound in tight, just backed off a touch to fine tune

i had similar probs, bad earth thru the body panels, fitted a second lead from battery to thermo housing

try another coil ? check all spade connections are tight

i got some new ht leads ,they were not a tight fit ,had to open up a bit , i also slid rubber sleeves back ,so i could see leads going home properly in top of dizzy cap ,then slid em back down

often hear about batchs of crap rotor arms too

i buy 2 at a time ,all leccy ign parts from simon bbc

also take fuel pipe of carb and turn over into a jar,a man should regularly check his flow

Morning both.
Re the ignition I beleve its working how it should but I did order the internal bits to replace the old ones... then everything would be new... but they sent the wrong bit so ill be on the phone come 9am
When I had this problem with the old coil I found the spark to be very weak, hence the new coil (spark is now very strong) but I'm now wondering if somthing could be happening to the12v feed to the coil... I may try feeding the coil direct from the battery DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A GOOD IDEA??
I'm still a little concerned with the carb... in the video it looks like its getting too much fuel. I like steves comment on the max volume screw but this is a 34 ich weber and I think it only had mixture and idel adjustments?

I was hoping to get the landy to the war and peace show this year but as we leave next weekend its looking doubtful :-(

Any thoughts and comments (constitutive ones please lol) always welcome and now needed

Correct. That model of carb only has those two adjustments. I assume you've done the baseline adjustment. The idle adjustment shouldn't be any more than two turns out. Mine is one and a half. Is the idle jet clean? Just unsrew and give it a good blow. It should have the number 50 stamped on it for a landy.If your getting a good spark and it's cutting out after a short run it's pointing to a fuel problem. How's all the crankcase breather connections?
 
I had a classic mobile mechanic come out to set it up as I was running out of time. So I assume he did set it up... but ill go down later and do it myself... I just dont have the strobe light. If the mix is too rich maybe thats why the carb is smoking? Ill wind everythig in then out and start again. If it stops after a short run ill power from the battery and see if that helps.... (is it too early to start looking for a 200tdi ?)

Carb smoking!!? That sounds really bad. If there's smoke come from the throat, that suggests valve leaking or serious timing issues.
If it's the body then it's getting to hot.
Rich mixture won't cause smoke (maybe from the exhaust).

Running a lead direct from the battery is a good idea to test for duff wiring.
 
ive got the same carb , i said volume screw ,but meant mixture
yep worked that one out,,, just picked up a strobe so off to have another play.... your only down the road from me, I'm in Gillingham, so if you want to come up and set mine up please feel free :)
 
OK quick update... the new sports coil seams to be doing the trick with a nice strong spark. Running on the weber it was quite lumpy and seemed to be throwing fuel all over the place and a fair amount out the top when you turned the engine off... this was enough to tell me something wasn't right, so off with the weber and back on with the zenith. This allowed me to play with my new strobe light and time the engine up, a little tweek with the colour tune and i think i could be getting close!

Test run tomorrow to see how things go under load but I'm hopeful :)

Will contact the people about the weber 1st thing Monday morning :) Watch this space lol
 
The webber should be a good carb as many car makers used them on their engines, id say the carb is dodgy id try to get a replacement, and as others say 1.5 turns out should be a good tuning start point and just adjust from there to get it running good.
 
Ill give them a call on monday and show them the video. I really dont know if the sound its making and the vapor is normal... im not too sure if the link is working?
If they will exchange it ill gladly try it.. but I think ill be able to get to the mot station on the old one now :)

Sounds like the fuel is boiling in the carb! Isn't there supposed to be an insulating piece between the carb and manifold?
 
I dont know, when i took the weber off the paper gasket was soaked in petrol?
I'll ask for a replacement and see if that's better.... or a refund and spend it on beer :rolleyes:
 
Ok old carb seams fine for starting and idel... butcas soon as the engine is unber load it coughs and spluttered. Take the load off and it returns to a normal idel... maybe ghe gimming needs advancing?

But its about the best its been since starting the engine swap so progress has been made!!!
 
just had a look at the vid, and that sounds very strange, how did you get it to run? like john said it does sound like the timing would be too advanced, sounds like it maybe say 8 to 10 btdc. or too retarded as they run like that and have noo power whatsoever, and the carb does sound a bit girggly over fuelling and probably faulty.

sort of sounds like someone is boiling up some tea, but i see that it looks like you had the choke on.

Well just finished talking with accu5park.

In short it’s My fault I didn’t know there were 2 different types of distributor for a land rover and its unreasonable to think they would point this out when placing an order (I should know what distributor I have) Even when I told them I had a 1971 series land rover its ok for them to send me a part for a distributor that wasn’t used on a land rover until 1974.

In addition they feel that it’s ok for me to have to pay before sending the part, but when you need a replacement they won’t send it until they have received the incorrectly sent item and "Checked" all this over a £20 part

I guess if you’re looking for customer service and helpful informative people you need to choose your suppliers a bit better than me :-(

In contrast I called re the £110 weber and its being collected tomorrow and a replacement is due with me on Thursday well done Eurocarb!

Hi,
Just got off the phone to Rob, After a quick chat he thinks the floats may be full of fuel so sinking??? Never had this problem with the Prima LOL

The gurggling one will be collect tomorrow and i should have a replacment by Thursday.. :)

May even get it on the road for the W&P show :)
