It's with great sadness i have to announce i have had to part company with my freelander after the best part of six years together.

I couldn't get it through the MOT with the emissions even after doing the stem valve oil seals, new bosch lambda sensor and cat.

I'm kicking myself for getting rid but i had no where to store it off road, if i had i probably have had a go at replacing the pistons and liners as i think this was the problem with burning oil.

Fecking MOT and emissions, the mot tetser said most car he see's written off are for emissions, i'm going to miss the old girl. :-(

Thank you to all the knowledgable folks on landyzone who've helped me over the years keep her going for this long.

New rings would more than likely have sorted it. You don't get much liner wear on modern engines.

That's a shame, especially after all the time you put in to it recently. I can't help but to blame poor quality after market cats for this. The compression was fine which kinda discounts the rings.
I had the same problems with my MGF. I bought an OE cat in the end. Luckily I got a New Old Stock replacement so it wasn't to expensive.
Good luck with whatever the future holds.

Sorry to hear digi. I feel exactly the same way about my KV6, love it way more than the 4 cylinder.
When you fitted the 2 inlet manifold gaskets and fitted the greenish paper type gasket to each, please tell me that you torqued each bolt to spec and that you absolutely applied RTV sealant to surround the coolant holes for each manifold gasket? Please tell me you did this..

There was only one green rubber gasket on the inlet manifold, i torqued it to that listed in the haynes manual, i didn't apply any rtv sealant around the coolant holes.

I'm still thinking is there anything else i could have done, i'd have kept it if i had some where to park it off road as the mot had expired.

Ok, digi, I was assuming you had a KV6 Freelander, was yours a 4 cylinder from the sounds of things? In the 4 cylinder, the intake manifold gasket is also green in colour coincidentally, but is made of rubber whereas the Kv6 intake manifold gaskets, 2 of them are made of paper gasket.
