I have a 2009 Freelander HSE 2.2 Deisel. I have been using it for the past 2 days with no problems. This morning, I was sitting in the car with the engine running and just entering an address into the Satvav. I just got ready to drive away and the engine just stopped with the message "reduced engine performance" without me touching anything. I tried starting it a few times but it just turned over and wouldn't start.

I had to move to my other car and leave the Freelander for the day. When I came back from work in the evening, it started as normal. I then turned off the engine and tried restarting again. This time it wont even turn over and there is a yellow triangle flashing with a circle in the middle with an arrow on the circle with an exclamation mark. The key fob would not eject. After pressing the keyfob in a few times it finally ejected. I dont want to put the keyfob in again in case I have to sit there for ages again, waiting for it to eject.

What is going on?

Thanks!

Check that the battery is fully charged first, and then after that maybe fuel, when was the fuel filter last changed, when you say would not turn over at all, it's not even cranking ? if so that could be the starter, but check battery 1st

Thanks all for the replies. I fitted a new battery recently, so I went for purchasing a crank sensor and a fuel filter because it has never been changed for years. The parts arrived today so I will be fitting them this weekend unless it is raining.

I will post back an update.

Cheers!

Remember you will need to bleed the fuel system after changing the fuel filter one of these below is very useful.

Do not try to start the car unless it as been bleed.

The crank sensor is easy to fit did you buy a Febi one.

A crank sensor or fuel filter won't stop the fob from ejecting. It sounds like a battery voltage issue to me

Hi, no I have a Bosch filter and a sensor that came from UK Auto Sensors. The syphon hasn't arrived yet so just waiting for that.

Cheers!

I think the ejecting fob was another issue. But it seems to be OK now. I think it was the cold weather causing it to not eject.

Thanks!

I changed the fuel filter this evening. It is running OK but I felt the engine stop for a split second and then continued to run. I think the problem is still there. So tomorrow I am going to change the crank sensor.

So I changed the Crank Sensor tonight and the car is running. No stops or jolts so far. I am too scared to drive it around the block because I don't want to sit there for hours waiting for a recovery van. So just running it on the drive for now. Hopefully this has fixed the cutting out.

Thanks All for your information as this has become a learning curve for me.

Cheers!

Go out and give it a test drive have confidence in what you have done and it will pay dividend for you.
