Hi hope everyone’s well.
I’ve seen a LR 90 Defender 1988.
Car looks pretty straight and clean but it’s has a Isuzu 2.8 Diesel engine inside it. I’m guessing previously it had a 2.5 n/a or 2.5TD.
What are these engines like and are they reliable.
Also if I ever had to sell my landy off will it put people off buying due to the engine?
I know the efficiency and speed the engine gets is better then the original engines , the mileage on the engine is 80k.

It’s a good engine. The only thing to watch is a grub screw under the oil filter housing that can work loose. If it does, you lose oil pressure but it’s easy enough to check.

I don't know about that engine, but years ago I had a 1.7 TD Vauxhall Astra estate. Vauxhall used an Isuzu engine in them and it was superb. I haven't had anything with an Isuzu engine in it since, but I wouldn't think twice about having another.

So long as the conversion has been done well it should be okay, it will certainly be an improvement on the original engine.

lt may reduce the value for some buyers who want an original Land Rover but that would be more for restored or pristine original examples

l would want to drive it, to see how it performs and if it's good to drive.

2.8 direct injection isuzu is bomb proof but a little noisier than its 3.1 indirect injection sister. i would prefer it to any pre 200tdi engine. It will go well in a 90, I have driven one in an early range rover and it performed ok even in that
