You have removed the cover plate but not the bearing carrier, it will be stuck on with a gasket or gasket goo, once carrier out then you are home and dry.

Evening all.

Success!! so there was another plate that needed to come off it was stuck on there with alot of gloop, didn't see it to begin with! So roamerdrive all fitted and in place. Filled with oil all nice and happy.

However, when we came to fit the leaver the screws holding the plate on the transfer leaver are rounded off. Couldn't get them out with a bolt extractor either. So now I think I need to drill them out and hope there is a enough meat under the plate to grab with a pair of molegrips. Or replace the leaver housing and transplant the mechanism.

"3 hour installation" to install a roamer drive :D

Mine had mangled phillips (or pozi?) when I fitted my roamerdrive. They came out pretty easy with a centre punch.
Replaced with some allen head, or might have been torx.

Yeah got them out, took out the dif lock stick casing off, put it in the vise and manged to get some bolt extractors to work. So have been worse.
 
So how long did it end up taking - I usually estimate and x4. I am in the very early stages of learning and its difficult when there isn't anyone with you keeping you on the right path.

So it took me 3 x 4hrs sessions I would say. It is cold at the moment, which things slower some how. The instructions said a typical installation should take 3hrs.

Having done it now, 3hrs is realistic if you don't have any issues and have done it before, I think. The difficulty with the install in terms of not getting the drive bearing out, that was due to lack of knowledge on my part.

The issue with the mangled machine screw heads. Well that's just working on cars, in my experience anyway. Frustrating but not really surprising.

Land rovers are good cars to learn on I think. Most parts are plentiful and places like this really do solve most problems if you're willing to put the effort back in for others.

Good to hear my advice was spot on, shows the old memory aint dead yet!
 
Can you post a photo of the extra stick arrangement ?
So what was the difference in its driving, was it higher speed or lower revs?

Sure thing, that's with it in the engaged position, while I was testing in the garage. When disengaged its pulled down towards the center/cubby box. Its all very neat. Nothing interferes, and you can operate all your gear sticks with any of them in any position.

Driving wise, it's a bit of both really. The way I drove it, was to reach 70mph then engage the drive. So the noise and the rpm did drop a noticeable amount. You could use it to continue to accelerate but then the engine noise and rpm will rise too. your fuel economy will drop then too from my understanding, given the airodamics of a shed. It's easier to stay in the over drive then shift gears as traffic requires, once you are up to speed.

In use, its all a very smooth affair, I used it in low range as well and it does allow you to build up speed much more easily. So for off road purposes you can build momentum quicker and then disengaged the overdrive at a fair speed to keep your gearing advantage of low range. Not used off road yet though.

Yes, comparable quality to OME I would say. Fits very well. It does say when fitting if everything doesn't line up then you need to adjust your engine mounts. Thankfully mine was good!

huh, I didn't even think about that, but yeah I guess so! maybe it's left in from the instructions on the Series model?
