One day the needle of the fuel gauge dropped off the scale, light on! A few searches of this great forum gave me some info on where to locate the unit in question. However a couple of bum steers didn't help.
Anyway, for those of you who have had this problem here's a tip.
After dismantling most of the rear of the car to gain access to the floor I found the access plate not as described in some searches. It is right in the middle of the boot floor. I found it best to cut a neat flap that could allow easy access to this area for future use.
Once removed the pump and sender can be inspected. Using a multimeter set to ohms check across the two sender pin terminals, both small wired, the other two thicker gauge wires are for the pump. If no reading is seen here check further down onto the sender scale pcb itself. Check across the two soldered joints, lift the float arm up, the reading should decrease in value. If you get no reading or if sporadic then check the soldered joints.
I found I had a poor soldered joint on one of the two wires on the pcb, re-soldered and checked again it was resolved.
Refit pump unit, I would refit the tank seal first once cleaned, then refit the pump unit. Remember to tilt the unit to the right and drop the float arm in first then straighten the unit up, saves you dicking around with the seal afterwards. Locate the tab to align then hand tighten up the locking collar whilst pushing down on the sprung loaded pump unit.
