I've almost completed Operation Freebifter and look forward to posting some photo's when I get her cleaned and valeted. Unfortunately I've got a couple of niggly problems that I need help on.

I've read load of posts in relation to seized VCU's and am beginning to wonder if I'm the next victim of this.

Mine's a 2000 1.8 XEI 3dr with 60k (orignal engine still) on the clock by the way.

Anyway when the weight of the car transfers from front to back I seem to get a knock from somewhere around the rear axle. It's not everytime and seems to be when I do a crap gear change from 1st to 2nd. It also seems to be when turning left at the same time. I've had a near rear diff in the past and had to have one of the bushes changed after this as it was split and was given quite a similair noise. So the question is......Is this the VCU that's on the blink or do we think it could be something less serious (fingers crossed etc...)

2nd problem is a performance thing, recently I've noticed that when tootling along at 30mph I can almost feel the car pushing on wanting to go faster. I've previosuly had it into LR who couldn't find anything but charged 70 odd quid for the priveledge. It's one of those things that when you drive a car day in day out you pick up on. I've changed the plugs but no difference. When static and idling you can feel it's a lumpy tickover. I'm thinking new leads but I'd love some other opinions.

Have you checked the rear Diff bush again since? They can be quite regular. Also if the front one was totally shagged last time it may have worn the others out. I am my no means a K series buff by any means but if you have a Mass Air Flow sensor fitted to the air intake this may need a blast with the good 'ol choke cleaner.

Your noise on gear changes is almost certainly a rear bush, probably the top diff bush, 20 minute job.

is the noise more of a thud or clank noise. if its a loud clank it could be the rear sub frame mounts starting to crack on the body. this was quite common on cars subject to continueous stop starting

It's more of a thud noise, different to when the bush went last time and not as persistant. From the replies it's pointing away from a shagged VCU so at least there's light at the end of the tunnel. I'll lob it into my honest mechanic mate and let him have a poke around.
