Not either of the above but not anything I have seen on a landy axle before,however its where the breather tube should be.

The chassis is in pretty good nick for 20 years old and the diff has seen better days
And you know what bit I mean

Oh do you know what it is? And would this be why oil is leaking out of front seal?

looks like a concertina sealant bottle but hard to see clearly ,do you mean seal for diff flange that prop bolts to ,it could leak through worn seal ,worn/grooved flange ,play in pinion bearings letting flange move

Need to put some diff guards on it to hide it but hopefully by the end of the year I will completely restore it
