I've been given 10 litres of Halfords part synthetic 15W40 engine oil. On the pack there's a picture of a car with the word petrol.

Question: is this OK for a diesel engine? I wouldn't have thought there was much difference apart perhaps from a lesser detergent effect. However, I'm loath to bung it in until I'm sure.

I don't know if this link works:

Any advice, please?

Thanks for that. The trouble with getting advice from a Google search is that opinions are divided 50/50!

I'll change the oil and run it for a while. Since it was free I'll treat it as a flushing oil.
