hi all

today i decided to go turn the engin over an let it run for 10 minutes or so. all was going fine and when i got out to talk to the guy next door i noticed my fan had stoped spinning. now i know when the engin on my punto gets a bit too hot when standing the fan kicks in an starts to go to work, i thaught it was just somthing the later model of cars done. is my defender do the same thing? i was thinking maybe this is a problem because my defender is a 91 model wich is quite old now. all the belts are spinning fine but the fan just isnt moving. im no mechanic, i dont have a clue about engins ha ha :S

thanks in advance

pass not sure on that

is it a viscous fan?

if it is, with the engine off just spin the fan over and make sure nothing is fowling or the inside or the coupleing isnt buggered, mine has a light risistance but smooth feel to it, mine with the engine running spins. (not sure if its ment to as i dont no much about them)

yeah its the viscous fan

just been out now to have a look. its just like yours as you say theres some resistance but its got a smooth feel to it.

when you spin your fan dose your belts an spin or do they stay still. it might just be me, i worry too much haha

i hope all is ok!

when you first start the engine with a viscous fan it will spin with the engine for a short while. it will then stop and spin slowly and you should be able to stop it with a rolled up newspaper.(dont try your hand as a mate tried this too soon and almost lost a finger!)
when the rad gets hot there is a bimetallic strip on the viscous coupling which moves and locks the fan so it will spin with the engine again. once the rad has cooled down it will release and go slowly again. When they fail they can either lock solid and overcool or not lock at all and overheat!

Just take the fan off alltogether as its not really needed on the 200tdi if your antifreeze/water mix is ok. Unless your towing a heavy loads up big inclines it never really cuts in anyway, I have and had no problems all last year.
Im sure Trewey will say the same as I took advice from him in the first place

well i will be towing a trailer with alot of heavy equipment this summer, but as well as that im realy looking froward to having some fun in the summer :D

cheers for the replys guys, i verry much apreciate it!

Why would you take the fan off? surely it causes no harm it being on there? my 200Tdi doesn't have one at all, but it always smells a bit warmer than my old 2.5n/a did, and that had a fan.

were does your temp gauge sit while driving on the road at a steady speed 60 to 70 no towing , and no saying on the dash next to the fuel lol
mine sits at half way or is that too high

to be honest its only been left running on my driveway, its sorn off the road at the moment till i get my MOT sorted. managed to sort my wheels but one is too rusted, so need to get 1 new wheel.

i think a few more weeks an all will be right :)
