Hi, just wondering if the corroded part of my discovery 1 front wing/wheel arch is an mot failure .
Attached a pic showing the corroded areas . Mot ticket said front suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded. 2.4.a.3 .

Iv taken the wing off to have a look and to see if anyone can weld it mobile here on drive. But it is only on the arch and doesn't affect the suspension so wondering if it should be fail or not?

Cheers jay

I'm not that good on MOT's but I thought the arches didn't fail unless near the body mounts. As thats in the middle I wouldn't have thought so.

depends on the mot inspectors opinion realy. lets face it, it looks like it needs doing anyway.but i doubt my mot man would have passed it.

id just fix it anyway just for peace of mind, might wise learning to weld. buying a welder will always pay for it self.

Where in lancashire are you ? I'm in cumbria so if you're not too far away I could give you a crash course in welding basics

my mot guy wouldn`t pass that and I would not have the cheek to put it in for test in that condition. one look and they are going to think ok what else aint been done, and go through motor with fine tooth combe

For corrosion to fail it must be within 30cm of a component mounting point, this includes any suspension part, seat belt, or seat if stalk is mounted to it, body mounting, brake component master cylinder / servo.

I don't think there is anything mounted within 30cm of the top of the wheel arch as the shock has its own turret mounted on the chassis, most testers would advice still.

Easier to get it welded.if its a hole which it is they will see it.and its failed now so it is off the road.easy enough to fix.

That's a common area of rust. On the offside it would be near the battery carrier to the front or servo near the rear. So that rust could be within 300mm of those items. I don't think there is anything on the near side that would be affected.
YRM has panels for that repair or you could patch them in.

That should not have been failed its more than 30cm from servo mounts (assuming its on the offside) so doesn't meet that failure criteria
There are no suspension mountings, body mounts within 30cm either

It wants sorting but its not an MOT failure!

thanks for the helpful replies.

yeah it will get fixed i was just curious and wanted a bit of info really. I keep this car at my parents so i struggle to get the time to do stuff to it. I would like to have the time to give welding a go but don't. So it will be paying a mobile welder.

I was looking at the panels from Yrm but wouldnt have a clue how to fit it .

chop and weld is how they fit, as above if you're close I could do it for you or show you how to weld if you find some time

Thanks for offer dr evil but i living in peterborough now so not too much time up north. The cars in Preston but i dont get chance to go home very often. once month. So was just thinking hire a mobile welder to sort it, one day though when i have a garage i may require your crash course in welding !

cheers jay

haha most weeks I'm actually in preston daily, if you need someone I know a mobile welder but not too sure if he covers preston. Guys very good though if he does, he does a lot of work for one of the garages I use for parts
