My ladder is identical shape (but the galvy one) and has been fitted there to all three Defenders I've had since 1993 and never a single comment from rozzers MOT or on any foreign jaunts. Just go for it! A

Don't move ladder to O/S even with a swingaway you won't be able to open door fully. my swingaway touches the rear tub, when opened to about 85degrees stick a ladder on and it'll stop the door when it's at about 65 degrees

I think that probably is illegal.

If you park your landy in a big flat open car park, and stand right behind your landys number plate. Walk backward for 22 meters so that you're standing exactly 22 meters behind the point directly below the middle of your number plate. Then, side step exactly 22 meters in either direction. In normal daylight, you need to be able to be able to easily distinguish every character on the numberplate from every position whilst you were side stepping.

If your ladder ladder impedes your ability to distinguish the characters at any point, you could be up for a fine (up to about a grand I think). Really it shouldn't pass an mot like that, but for those that have a lenient mot tester, probably not a good idea to draw attention to it.

Surely if you move 22 meters towards the drivers side then the spare wheel will impede your vision of the plate?

You should stand in a square and the corner of the square should be on the plate and you should be able to read the plate from anywhere in the square but I don't think it is as much as 22 feet, in fact I'm sure it isn't

I'm planning on moving mine to the back door only way you'll be able to see plate is if you're directly behind me in a car. Spare wheel will block it from every other angle. and as long as it's visible to the tester it's a pass they don't have to test it to see if it's speed camera compliant.

according to him it's 22mtrs or 70ft

Not quite.

You're right in that it's a big square, but you only have to be able to see it from within the triangle that's marked out by the diagonal from the number plate.

I'm just paraphrasing the law. If you can see the number plate from anywhere along the back of the square, you will be able to see it from anywhere within the triangle.

The 22 meters is in fact dependent on the size of the number plate letters. I just picked the worse case.

Does that 22m rule apply when having 2 mountain bikes obscuring your plate and indicators and lights

I see loads on the M6 heading for Cumbria like that

A guy on the way to work had a plate that read K MORGAN as plain as that

I couldn't work out what it actually was, neither could the cop behind him because a week later it read KM 08 GAN

hi

i dont know if this was legal but on my old series 3 i mounted the number plate along the top of the roof and fitted number plate lights either side of the plate

it went through the mots ok and never got pulled

dont know if that info is of any use to you or if it was indeed illegal

I'd say that was legal. As long as its mounted vertically (or as close to vertical as possible), the law appears to be silent on exactly where on the vehicle it should be mounted. So you can have it as high or low as practicality will allow.

Yes you can put it up on rack or along top of door , doesnt have to be lit at both ends can be lit from above or below middle. As long as its adequate to illuminate, some of the old no plate lights had radiused corners on underside to allow them to be adequate .

The ladder in front of existing plate would make it non compliant . Having said that I have had one on my 110 since 1986 , in Uk and many other countries , never even been mentioned by any enforcement so ?

Thanks all for the advice!

I hadn't even considered lighting, might be easier just to get a different ladder that doesn't obstruct the number plate :p

If it were me, I think I'd keep it as is.

I only say it probably is illegal, because thats the way the law reads to me. The statute doesn't specifically say that bolted on accessories must be fitted in such a way that those regulations aren't ever so slightly infringed from a funny angle. Unless there is case law exactly on that point, you'll probably get away with it, because plod is probably as unsure about it as you are. It's not as clear cut and you completely covering the plate. That type of ladder is so common on defenders, it's got to put enough doubt in plods mind.

Also, it seems unlikely that if you did get a tug and told to remove the ladder, you'd just get a seven day notice, to remove it and have it verified by a local mot station. Youre only likely to get a big fine if you then ignore that notice, and you get summoned to a magistrate.

hiya

i just put 2 x lights on as i had a spare one so just used it but the other member is correct as long as its visible

the way i look at it and hope know one takes offence, but with the high increase in thefts of defenders etc i would also prefer my number plate to be read by anpr cameras and also if its visible u don't have to worry about getting tugged then possibly a notice being issued by the police for you to change it, so in the horrible situation of theft at least the cameras will be able to read it properly and in doing so increase the chances of getting it back

to which of course i hope that never happens but with the increase of land rovers being stolen would concern me

getting it as an option along the top with a suitable light may be a cheaper option than replacing a ladder etc

but at the end of the day its your land rover and hope this hasn't come across as rude to u buddy and only an idea
