Looks like a crack in the actual casing casting where its opened up on the casting mark in the middle of the box. Oil seems to be slowly spreading from that location, may JB weld it to seal it or something. What do you guys think?

Its been there a while or must have been there a while as the land rover has only moved from the garden to the garage (about 30ft in 4 years) and we havent dropped it or anything and was running well when my granddad had it so can't forsee any internal probs that may have caused it

The oily stain on the box seems to be coming from it

they often have casting marks like that , though if its leaking it could be sealed ,though are you sure oils not running back from front seal or gasket where it joins main case

It just looks like a crack with the bit at the end and its different to the other casting marks on the box. Will double check about the oil but I'm sure its coming from here

Would JB weld be okay to seal it?

I dont want to risk any damage caused by welding especially as we dont do a lot of it and hardly ever on cast stuff

Ok thanks James :) I think we have some of that in the shed, will drain the oil out the box first (could probably do with a change anyway) and give it a good clean beforehand :)

I think it's an illusion caused by where a rough bastard file type thing has pushed the alloy over when filing down that casting sprue.

'bastard' is a type of file :)

Yeah I had trouble tracing oil leaks on my box (er it was the engine in the end!) and it would be wise to keep the box full of oil, do a pressure wash followed by a paraffin or other suitable solvent clean over that area, then leave it for a week or so. If it runs, maybe bring it up to temp so you get the oil thinner. Then see if it shows any weeping of oil.

If required you can the seal it up with moist weetabix left to dry (what JB weld actually is).

Did a check today and as James said it was a casting mark and its the gasket thats leaking (although not a lot at all so will leave for now). And as rattlegun said it was an illusion where the oil had run up to the step in the casting looking like a crack :)

Very pleased about that :)
