After signing up to the forum yesterday and riffling through threads, I have read some surprisingly reassuring threads related to v8 4.6 RR. People have made claims of getting 140/150 miles off £20 of LPG. That's better than my 1.4 206 pug manages on petrol !!! I have to put nearer £25 for that sort of mileage range, if the fuel costs are similar it makes a v8 RR field by LPG a realistic option :)

To summarise I basically would like answers as to the reliability and validity of such great fuel cost claims; could I expect near 150 miles off £20 LPG ? I mostly do motorway miles :)

Plus what a great forum consisting of such modest experts !!! :D
 
Most of the MPG claims made about the V8 Range Rover have to take into account the length of time they are on the back of an AA recovery vehicle. You can get from Lands end to John-o-Groats on very little fuel in that circumstance.:D:D:D
 
Really well that's good, I'm guessing it would be well worth buying an extended warranty, apparently the aa breakdown cover for around £20/month protects you against high garage costs of upto £500 for a maximum of 5 claims/year, there Is a £25 excess for each claim but it seems a worth while package with any car over 10 years age especially a temperamental RR v8 :D

- Yes the fuel was half the price, however I found it used twice as much!

I have LPG on my 4.6 P38. 152k on the clock (already fitted when I bought it.) I filled up before I went to Cardiff on the weekend, 67.84 ltrs @ 73.9p = £50.13 , This got me 220 miles before I switched to petrol on the return journey. I was fully loaded and was not hanging around.....By my reconing thats around 14.2 MPG. (

As for reliability, I do not seem to have suffered anything worse than any other member on this forum......LPG apparently has it's pros & cons, but so far ( touching a large piece of wood) I do not seem to have suffered from any of the Cons.

I use the car every day for back and for to work 80 mile round trip as a minimum mainly motorways and fast A roads, and for towing a rather large caravan on most weekends.....

I know........I was just answering the question.....

This forum has it fair share of bias relating to
Classic vs P38 vs L322
Doosal vs Petrol vs LPG
4.0 Vs 4.6 etc etc....

I was just putting my case forward with my current experiences..... and so far ( I wish I had not said this) being on the back of and AA truck is not one of them, although being a P38 owner, it is surely to come.....
 
Well that seems really promosing!! obtaining 14.7MPG based on nonconservative driving and Having a substantial payload. I'm guessing if you was more conservative and was driving the car with little load and no passengers you could achieve nearer the mid to high teens :) I'm thinking in the future to purchase a 4.6 P38, Just trying to calculate the running costs,

I go to university 4 times a week which is a 45 mile round trip, along a roads and M1, so basically motorway driving with few stops. I estimate for a 4.6 P38 to average approx. 16MPG based on (motorway miles/No load/No Passengers/Conservatice driving)

If the prevailing rate of LPG is avg. 76p/l. based on around 16MPG I can expect to pay somewhere in the region of £44 per week, not bad at all for saying i put £30/£35 in my 1.4 206 :)

I'm Taking a stab in the dark with my extremely vague estimations! what MPG do you (hoarec) achieve on your 80 Miles round trips on the motorway ? what speed do you average ?

I live in coventry not far from motorway and work in Burton, So all M6, M42, A453, A38, keeping to the relevant speed limit :rolleyes: on each of these roads...

One thing to look out for is the price of LPG, I usually pay around 73/74 PPl, but this can vary quiet a lot....

I put about 500miles on the clock each week as a minimum.....

Sorry didn't answer the question, If I take it very easy and light footed, I can get into the very high teens......this is worked out on tank fill and not using the trip computer as this appears to be way out........

I just got back from Wales towing a boat and managed 225 miles out of about 75 litres of lpg. No idea what that works out as mpg but it's not far off what I get normally (235 out of a tank).

I was only doing 60 tho this time.

That's good mate 225 miles when towing.

I honestly think for what were driving (a big 4x4) the milage you can get from a tank of LPG at the cost you buy it at, is really not bad.

Yes we can all buy a car that's even cheaper to run, but Youl be sat behind the wheel bored and wishing you had somet better. And probly not saving that much more money anyway! :)

I have had a number of P38s over the years, 2.5 DSE was first, and although it has it's fans, it was not for me. Since then I have had 4.0 and 4.6 V8's all with LPG. It makes a lot of sense to me and have never had an issue with it (touch wood :) ).
Both 4.0 and 4.6 give about the same mpg, however, when towing my twin axle caravan, the 4.6 gives better mpg (only about 2 or 3 better - but it is noticeable that it tows better with the extra power).
One up, commuting on the motorway I expect 18 - 22 mpg from the V8 on LPG.
I only run on petrol for short distances when I run out :doh: and fill up asap,
so I don't know what the difference is with petrol, as I never believe the trip computer and calculate the mileage on filling the LPG tank.
1 up around town is generally 14 - 16 mpg.

Of course, all this depends on the state of the engine, the V8 can hide faults well,
which are generally picked up due to poor performance / low mpg.

A tip from me would be, test drive a few, you will notice the ones that have better
engine performance / pulling power than others.
Also, always buy a P38 with a good multipoint injection system already fitted.
There are loads out there and you will save a bundle by not getting it
fitted yourself. It takes about 2 years of normal driving before you start saving money,
so I always buy them ready fitted, after the expense of fitting one to a Classic back in the early 90's.
I have always driven LPG cars since the mid 90's, Jaguars, Vauxhalls, and of course the Range Rovers (my 'toy' a Land Rover 90 - doesn't count, neither does experimenting with the DSE RR).

I now have a little knowledge on how to gauge if a RR has a sound engine.
I've found out real life MPG off LPG fuel.
Also I now know what LPG system to look out for ;)

I can add these details to my RR 4.6 V8 LPG checklist

Does a 2.5TD actually save money anymore when compared to the V8, I hear that the engine is a BMW unit and is reliable, I have found that the many v8 owners would agree that the v8 is actually a fine engine that just requires regular service ;)

I would only be doing around 200 mile weeks up and down A roads and Motorway Surely this wouldn't stress a large engine to the extent regular service wouldn't be adequate to maintain the motor. By regular service I mean a Yearly Service and Liquid Checks every other month.

Sure there are going to be the expected parts which needs attention with any car, I have just had to spend £300 quid on my 206 which is only a cause of wear, It doesn't bother me.

basically what I'm alluding to is the question as to is a RR v8 really financially hard to maintain?

LPG is cheaper than petrol but the disadvantages are that you lose 10% mileage and 10% Horse power but it still makes it a viable option also the amount of space the gas tank takes up.
 
I bought a DSE last year and used it for travelling in Europe and did nearly 30 000 miles in it (it had 105000 miles on it when i bought it)and apart from the centre console switches and the passenger door lock failure had very little go wrong with it but made a mistake by having Pirrelli tyres on it as had 2 out of three of them have sidewall problems.
As i used it for camping in I found it chep to run as it saved me a lot of Hotel bills.

As long as you chose a good example matey il be fine.

As far as maintaining goes Youl need to check the fluids more regular than "every other month" lol, otherwise things will go down hill rather quickly :D

oh I see well maybe I'm just a lazy motorist who doesn't look after his motor by treating her to oil regularly :)

Well I'm sure I shall own one even if its just for the pleasure of owning the vehicle, I possibly might keep my 206 for shorter runs and nipping around in to save on petrol and to have another vehicle just in case something goes wrong with the RR :) The only thing which bothers me is the worry of relying on a car which might not get me from A to B or shall be a poor investment, waste of money! :)

A good V8 on gas may be as economical as a diesel on pump fuel but no where near as cheap to run as a diesel on biodiesel.
