I have spotted a 1994 300tdi.. has the following description

M reg,2.5L,diesel, 110k miles,manual,7 seater,remote central locking,towpack,alloys.MOT'd 02/09/2011,taxed end May 2011.New boot floor & brake pipes.Very good,original condition throughout for year.Drives well & reliable.

She is asking £1500 which means I should get it for around £1200/1300

Is there a big difference between 94/95/96/97 models ?

thanks

I had a 94 (300 tdi) and a 97 (300tdi) before and other than the 97 being an ES model, there was little between them. The big changes were in 93/94 when the 300 tdi replaced the 200tdi and then in 99 when the DII came out.

The amount of rust I'd say :D :D :D

Very true!

My '94 doesn't have an airbag but it is just a 300, not a GS or ES or anything. It doesn't have remote central locking either. It's also a bit obscure as it's a very early 300 so a some parts are main dealer only, like window regulators.

There are difference in parts - the rear wiper motors are different too, but by changing the connections over from one to the other it fitted fine.
Alternator was basically the same, with only slight changes and again bolted straight on.

Hope this helps. Why are you concerned?

I have been searching for over two months for a budget 300 and I didnt want to make a dreadful mistake by buying an early one and then finding out they should be avoided as opposed to the newer ones..

I think most guys on here would agree that the biggest problem is rust. My '94 is terrible, my '97 not so bad and probably only because it's had 3 less years on the road.

If a '94 (or even a 200TDi) didn't have rust (or at least bad rust) then it would still be a sensible choice if the price is right.

The later ones had a fly by wire throttle and some more electronics on the IP. Applied to all the autos and I think the later manuals but I don't know exactly what year they started.
Don't think it caused too many problems though.
Bear in mind at that mileage, a 94 might have the transfer gear problem with the manual gearbox. Fixed on the later cars.
Apart from that, as already mentioned look for the usual suspects rust wise.

Errrr bordering on mis-information here mate.

All TDi 300's with manual gearboxes are completely non-electronic. Auto box cars have EDC from 1996.

All TDi 300's have the same R380 gearbox and transfer box.

The thing that confuses me most is the rear lights !!!! Early ones had no lights in the bumper , then they had lights indicators in the bumper and rear light clusters (x4 indicators x4 side lights) , then mid way through stopped with just lights in the bumper with indicators , just brake lights in the light clusters ??? ....... Disco 1 . I have just bought a 97 P reg rot box TDi XS , half leather alloys , cl eleccy windas , thats it . My 98' S reg none model has Heated front screen , alloys , met paint , a/c , front fogs , leather steering wheel , airbags etc , but cloth seats ??

Seams what ever was in the facotry that day got fitted lol
