What people should do, and what people do do are two ertirely different things.

true and i don't claim to sit at bang on 70 or under the whole time I drive on the motorways.. my point was that the discovery 3 cannot do anything on road the discovery 1 and 2 can't as the only things it may be better at can't be done anyway... if you see what i mean :decision:

Does it matter if a D3 does or doesn't get used off road? Does it matter that any Landrover might not ever get used off road?

Isn't that one of Doncaster Ringer owner club's landies?
 
how can it not be A proper landy the disco has trapsed its fat ass all round the world in the camel trophy so there for it is a proper landy to me. mine dont leak oil but it leaks diesel and cant open the bonnet so does that count
 
Just to take a different tack. I think we have to look at an "original" land rover, that will help us see wether D2's, D3's FL2's RR's etc are "Real Land Rovers".

The Encyclopedia description of Land Rover is ..."a pioneering civilian all-terrain utility vehicle launched on 30 April 1948"...

So...if your car is a "pioneering civilian all-terrain utility vehicle"...and it says Land Rover on the bonnet/rear door then it must be - by definition - a REAL Land Rover...?

You would have to consider wether a RR Sport could be called a "utility vehicle"...but then we need a new set of definitions about what is a utility vehicle? If that utility is off-road capability (towing a trailer full of sheep up a field for instance) then I guess ALL Landy's are capable...but would you CHOOSE to use a RR Sport for towing a trailer full of sheep up a field???

If that "utility" is the School Run...then please stand against that wall and be shot!

Try threading a Disco3 down your average 'B' road at a decent lick. Then try doing the same in a Disco 1 or 2. The differance will be like night and day.

In every dynamic aspect, the Disco3 is light years ahead of the previous generation models.
 
Just my 2p worth.
Surely, REAL Landrovers usually suffer from rusty bulkheads, but my D1's bulkhead is totally rust free.
It's everything else that's rusting away!!
 
same hear we got ours 2 days before christmas 2008, shes a 200tdi and we are very plesently supprised, It has urnt the right to be a landi, Im very proud of her, Ive not lifted it, I put mudterains on, light bar (roof one) took the frount valance and fog lights off b4 they got riped off on the farm and (excuse me for saying it this way) crist she can pull and we got 30+ to the gallon so all in all I call that good well chuffed with our landrover

td5 discovery any day, it is is a good all rounder, it will tow anything a bit slow but put in a chip and hay presto a very fast td5,will leave other wood be 4x4 leaving,i would never change it.
 
i've always had 90's before and inherited my dads 300 dico a couple of years ago. Only mod is steel wheels and insa turbo sahara tyres,. To answer the question it is a very real landrover , mines a working farm vehicle and goes everywhere my tractor will so to those who tell you they're not real landies show them the finger!!!

Put in a chip? .... Mine is great except pulling away from rest.

Disco 1 and 2 drivers are generally more sensible, and know better than to drive like a nutter in two-and-a-half tons cars on average 'B' country roads.


Then try doing the same in a Disco 1 or 2. The differance will be like night and day.

And in my EXPERIENCE my Disco 2 with ACE will do the job as well or better than the Disco 3 actually.

Balls! No chassis, no axles, suspension geometry a HUGE phukup, front tyres lasting only 10-12 k miles, fuel consumption worse, there's nothing good about it from a REAL LandRover driver's 's point of view. Comfortable road car though, no doubt about that.

It's a pretty good slitty look-a-like - a fair imitation!

I think some people (including Land Rover these days it would seem) judge a "proper" Land Rover as being better overall off and on road than the competition. Others judge a "proper" Land Rover on being the best off road, without compromise and having certain components.

Given yesterdays news BBC NEWS | Business | Jaguar seals 'significant' order maybe we should be asking "Will these be proper Land Rovers?"
