So Jolly,

what you are saying is if I had years of car trading experience, easy access to BCA auctions (most seem to be on a work day), knowledge/experience of how the auctions work and the skill to spot a good car without the ability to spend ages test driving it and checking paperwork, reciepts etc... I could get it for a lot less.

The way my life goes, I would buy 3 or 4 complete turnips at auction despite my best efforts and end up washing cars in Tesco car park to try to pay back the debts I had racked up with the bank.

Unless there was a kind dealer who could come with me.....

:)

would be happy to come and view if you're in the birmingham area, no worries.

Bear in mind with landys this age that its going to need something doing to it but its down to how far you want to go (spend money) with it. look at the problems it might have and ask yourself 'am i willing to spend the money to put it right'. one car might need a paintjob but be solid as a rock everywhere else. another might look great but be knackered underside.

The good thing about landys is that 90% of components are on show so visual checks to chassis and body are easy.

Here is what i'd look for...but everyone is different so nobody shoot me if they dont agree.

Bulkhead - footwells both sides and on the front around the screen hinge points and down around the door hinges (easy to do as they are on outside of car) footwells are bit harder as you need to get under the car. replacing the bulkhead is a major job so cross this off your list of current / future problems.

check around each spring mounting point on the chassis for rot and the body out riggers. the thoery here is that a hole in the chassis on a flat section is easier to repair than replacing outriggers and spring mounts.

inside check the area where the seatbox bolts to the rear tub (just below the door catches) if this area is rotten (or corroaded for aluminium) then your in trouble. replacing the rear tub is not a small job but replacing the seat box wouldn't be the end of the world.

check the bottoms of the doors (look right under them not just the bottom of the skins) as these rot and even on ebay they are not cheap.

these items seem to be expensive to buy second hand on ebay for be warned if you buy a car that needs em.

doors
wings
axles
steering boxes

dont buy a car if it needs.
bulkhead
rear tub
major chassis work

i've just bought a 89 2.8 daihatsu powered 90 csw for 600 quid, needs a rear cross member and a paint job. replaceing prop joints and trackrod ends and bulbs etc. all in it should owe about £900 without paint.

hope this helps...remember to take a torch and a screwdriver with you and good luck

Thanks for the info and offer to view, really appreciate it. Unfortunately too far for me.

The car I'm going to see has and I quote:

a small rust spot on the top right of the bulk head and a hole developing in the passenger footwell but they are not too bad. A 50mm square patch on both would sort them out.

Would you just walk away or is this within the realms of easy to fix. I can weld, but not briliantly.

Also both front doors are rusted on the frames at the bottom so would need replacing.

Here is a picture of one of them.

Again, for this age and price... is it a walk away or worth a punt.

thanks,

didn't say whether the hole on top of bulkhead was on outside or inside somewhere. if its in the usual place at the top corners then replacement panels are available and its not to bad a job. The door card has seen better days and must say i've never tried to repair a door bottom and am not sure if panels are available to do it.

I bought a 110 to break up for spares on a hybrid i'm building and the doors where in better nik than that.

One thing to say is what my old gaffer used to say.

'If you stand on a bridge over the motorway and watch you'll see theres a million cars out there'....ie dont take the first one the comes along because there will be another one in a minute.

bulkhead and doors are common on landys this age so it might not be the end of the world but at 2k asking price i'd walk and wait a bit longer.

i would walk away.
its a n/a thats rotten.
you will end up spending another 2 grand sorting it and even then it will still only be a crap n/a csw.
save your money for something decent.

Thanks for all your replies.

Some good info here.

I am still going to see the landy tomorrow, even if I just treat it as a fact finding mission and get some perspective in relation to condition to price it will not be a wasted journey.

I spoke to my friend (an agricultural engineer) who makes tractor mounted machines like polysheet layers, tree lifters and tray fillers for nurseries and he is willing to swap my time for his time.

So I have free access to an expert fabricator, CNC machine, sheet benders, tig, mig and oxy welding as well as his knowledge which is the most important of the lot. His scrap parts bin probably has everything I could require so I wouldn't even need to buy the raw materials.

This alone will make owning a landy easier on the pocket and I should under his expert tuition, become a better welder (ie things stick together :)

Very true, and thank you for the offer. We are just South of Dorking so I may well call on your experience if I see any decent 110's your way.

We went to see this N/A and it looked in good condition. the chassis was solid, hit it with a hammer and apart from crud in my eyes it was all ok until I got to the back.

I noticed that I could see up through the floor underneath the rear seats (where the floor raises) and went inside and lifted the carpet and it was in a bad state. Back underneath and I found that the bar that goes across the chassis was rotten and crumbled. So we ran away.

What is this bar called please? It sits to the front of the rear tyres and runs underneath the rear seats from left to right. Appears to sit on top of the chassis .

Does anyone have an annotated exploded diagram of the chassis and associated parts?

thanks,

for the kind of money you have to spend i would stay well clear of csw's or any 5 door land rover for that matter , you will only end up with a bucket.
you done right to walk away , that sounds like a pretty screwed land rover and a mountain of expencive bills will follow it around until someone has the sense to break it for parts.
whats the very most you can spend and if you wait a while will that get any better?
