Would appreciate some guidance please from the experts.

I'm going to see this 110 CSW tomorrow:

Find 1986 LAND ROVER 110 4C SW D GREY on eBay within, Land Rover Range Rover, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 11-Nov-07 18:08:24 GMT)

the seller said he has a £2k reserve but there are no bids and I would prob offer £1K to start with. It is a 1986 2.5 N/A and in good condition (apparently) apart from:

"Chassis is v.good for a twenty year old Landy all the outriggers are fine. Their is a small rust spot on the top right of the bulk head and a hole developing in the passenger footwell but they are not too bad. A 50mm square patch on both would sort them out. No coolant brake or clutch fluid leaks, the engine has the usual oil seeps (it keeps the chassis rust free;-) ) but nothing to worry about."

I know what to look for, but whether I can spot it or know enough to make an informed decision is another point, but experience (and this forum) will help with that.

If the rust is as described is it worth carrying on or walking away? If it has these spots is there a high probability of there being more hidden horrors.

Now, my main question is regarding the N/A engine. I have done quite a few searches on this forum and read a lot of replies but I am worried that the engine will be underpowered for a 110 or has been abused by previous owners because it is under powered. I spoke to a friend who said to stay away and go for a 200tdi, but another friend said they are exellent engines.

I will be towing, but nothing heavy, just DIY stuff, maybe ton of sand etc. And I don't drive fast anyway and it won't be belting up the motorway everyday. I do want a solid reliable engine that I can maintain myself and one that I can begin to learn about.

A few people have mentioned budgeting on dropping in a 200Tdi which would be in the region of £600 and a good upgrade. But this type of work is beyond my skills at present so not an option although perhaps in a couple of years....

Sorry if this has been answered before. I have had a good search and even started reading ALL posts from page 135 and worked my way backwards to 115 so far.

thanks,

Well it is indeed low on power. but the fact is because of the lack of power its components are never really under any amount of stress, makes it a good solid reliable engine. I wouldnt have one if motorways are used regular as you will struggle to keep up with the trucks. Mine does 60mph ok on a flat road but any incline causes a decrease in that speed. You can never take anyones word for the condition of a vehicle so its impossible to judge its worth on a description. take a hammer with you and hit the chassis in a few places if it falls apart or flakes off then you gotta ask yourself if it will pass an MOT! the bulkhead if bad enough will fail an MOT and they are no fun to change, quite costly to get a mechanicker to do. But for £1000 you gonna be lucky to get anything but a shed.

My last ninety had un and I always thought it was surprisingly brisk - unless you were lugging a load and a hill was involved. Always stuck at 60 nicely (wouldn't want to rush the old thing anyway) and a piece of pee to work on.

Thats why with my latest ninety i'm sticking with the old 2.5TD lump despite what naysayers say. Don't expect miricles, don't thrash it, service it regularly and it'll get you half way to uranus.

Yup same here. I had a 2.5n/a in a 110 truck cab and if anything it was a bit nippier than the t/d I've got now. A lot depends on the size of wheels/tyres you put on. Given that the bloke selling that one has said he wants 2k for it I would have thought offering him a grand would be a good way to get told to **** right off. Having just read through the details again it looks like a snip for 2 grand. Trouble is these days too many people want a top notch landy with nothing wrong with it and they want it for nothing.

yup, i agree with hughesy. n/a isnt the fastest of engines but its strong and good enough for the job. granted it isnt a 200tdi but a good cheaper alternative

:)

I am glad I appear to have picked a good un as I am a complete newbie to all of this. It sounded as though it was mostly cosmetic faults and the underlying chasis and bulkhead is sound.

Point taken on offering £1k. I thought after viewing I would start off low and work up but wasn't sure if it was worth 2K or not. In fact I had no real idea how much it was worth but that is why I am on here asking questions.

Unfortunately I can't even view it due to family constraints so will have to let it go. Someone else has bid so hopefully it will go to a good home.

But never mind, my neighbour has just dropped off two crates of LRO magazine back issues so I have over 100 issues to read through and absorb.

Thanks for all the feedback and information. Really do appreciate it. Reading books can only teach you so much.

offer him 1750 and see what he says, be willing to go upto the 2 grand but feel good even if you get it for 1950

The lower powered engines are an attitude of mind.

Basically, you have "LandRover Attitude", and you don't mind if there's a mile of slitties behind you .........

THEIR attitude to your Landy will soon change when you come along and see them slipped off the road or stuck in a snowdrift.

seem as it didnt fetch its reserve, send him an emal offering 1750, you never know he might take it

I phoned him earlier today to apologise for not being able to view it as arranged and asked him to keep in touch if it didn't sell.

I would really like to view it first before putting in an offer, although I am sure all the other bidders didn't.

Are people that confident to bid without viewing? Seems a bit mad to me, or is it a bargain that should be jumped at?

thanks,

I bought my TD after 1 viewing because it was solid, well looked after and the engine was immaculate. A lot of the naysay comes from experiences with poorly maintained, rotting vehicles which have been abused. There's no reason one shouldn't be prepared to pay a premium for something that's going to last. Mine, like the one you are looking at, has a small hole in the passenger footwell and i'll probably need a new rear crossmember and outriggers fitted in the next 5 years but these are all very doable and well documented issues which are consistent with the age of the machine. The NA will last you forever...

I'm going to view it on saturday.

Seems like a sound bloke, army mechanic so knows how to fix things with a hammer.

Says he has done loads more than mentioned on the auction, inc stripping bits of the engine, replaced a piston (number 4 which he said often go) checked camshaft bearings + lots more inc replacing valves. Has a stack of army manuals (on how to hit things) and loads of receipts.

Lets hope I can spot if it is a good buy or not when I view.

The N/A aengine sounds ideal for me. I like to drive slowly and only have to go 12 miles down country lanes to get to work so don't need a fast beast, and I like the idea of holding imaptient BMW drivers up :)

most army landys use the n/a dont they?
he should be a dab hand at keeping them running

sounds alot to me 1750, maybe its just me....seem an original 200tdi 90 csw 'h' plate got thru bca the other day make 1500 quid, ebay prices seem to be above auction prices but below autotrader prices and seeing as everybody is watching ebay it is hard to nick anything and get a good deal, i'd look thru autotrader and make contact with a few and see if they will have a deal.....just a thought from a used car dealer

The army use TDi300 engines these days and remove the turbo unit as it adds unwanted maintenance overhead. They rightly concluded that the TD5 was way too complicated to be worked on in difficult conditions and didn't bother with it.
