Here's a plan buy a Puma with a knackered engine and drop a 200tdi in it best of all worlds then! :D PS I run Transits and have a Jumbo 350 140 ps and it goes like stink on 180000 miles "just sayin" :bolt:
 
The leaps and bounds thqt all other marques make is not made in defenders. Imagine a fiesta. On a w reg (td5 age) and a current model (58 ish reg) clear progression has been made. Not so for a fender. IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT.

The first part of this is basically what LR is saying for replacing the defender - 'imagine if it was replaced every 10 years with a new model' - 2013's one is meant to be it.
 
If as a result of keeping the TD5 you have a bit of cash to spare, and are looking for a better road drive you could consider an ECU upgrade and fitting an overdrive such as this one. This would retain the advantages the TD5 offer over the Puma and offer a more relaxed presence on the road.
 
Puma's also have an integral clutch cylinder which means box out to change and Ive seen them go on vehicles less than a year old and the famous ford dual mass flywheel.
Not to mention a build quality which is poor even by lr standards
