Is the 1.8 really that bad - well mine's reached 120k miles in it's 15 years - had it misbehaved too much in that time then it would probably have been scrapped long before I came along and bought it - so it's a no from me;)

They are not all bad. Can you imagine how hard that little light weight 1.8 has to work in order to pull 1.5 ton of freelander about and to continue doing it for 120K miles!!
When I first started in the automotive industry, older cars i worked on needed to be De-coked every 30 - 40K miles! This gave them a nice new HG every 5 years so actual HG failure was rare, now we blame the engine if the HG fails at 70K. If the 1.8 HG is treated like a VCU and assumed to be a long interval service item, you expect it to fail at some point? You can have the money ready for when it does fail so avoid a nasty surprise ;)

I know bud that's what I said :)

that's what MHM says too

i'd like to think that if they're maintained and kept an eye on they'll reciprocate by behaving themselves.

but who knows
I park mine next to a Freelander 2 at the stealers. Soon fixes it's own problems. ;)
