I've done the search and not found any reason to fear EGR removal so went ahead and took it out last night. However was talking to a mech. engineer in work this morning and he had some concerns about EGR removal, particularly in diesel engines, which I'd not previously heard. He had previously always taken EGRs out of his cars but had changed his mind on it.
His point was that the recycled exhaust gases cool the combustion as they introduce low oxygen air to the mix. The fuelling is mapped accordingly so if running on only fresh air the oxygen content is raised and combustion will be hotter. This would suggest that EGR removal would unwittingly increase combustion temperature and increase wear, for example in the turbo.
My first reaction was some concern but then considering that Land Rover engines are over cooled thanks to the big viscount fan, and not excessively tuned maybe its not an issue.
Any thoughts?
