Posted on a thread before and didn't get much help. I've got a 90 defender and when I start it it's on the button but as soon as it's revved or you pull away it has no power. Today I tried it with no load and revved it hard and it cut out and took a few turns of starter to fire up. Once this problem has gone it will run fine all day. It's like there's air in the system but it can't be drawing it in once it has cleared the problem. It had a new lift pump 6 months ago but it was a britpart one. Has anyone got some good idea of what's wrong. I'm having problems sorting this. :(:(:(

A few weeks ago, mine went through the motions of running out of fuel and losing all power but it still ticked over. It then revved back to life and drove fine for 20 miles or so before the same problem came back.

Turns out it was the lift pump. It got changed and I've not had any problems since.

I had the same problem with my 90 after much head scratching and disconecting pipes etc i found a piece of insulation tape in the fuel tank that every now and then found its way in to the end of the pick up pipe thus restricting the amount of fuel being delivered.
is there any smoke from the exhaust when this happens?

No smoke and always runs fine after initial problem. I've emptied the tank completely and checked that there's no water in there. If lift pump is the problem will it run ok after initial problem

Find a hill and put your foot down up it and see if it cuts out. If it is the lift pump it will also get worse gradually.

When my mates went we were off road. Going up a steep hill and it randomly died. It wouldn't go up any hills but it drove like normal when it wasn't under load. Drove all the way home just fine too.

Seems fine going up hill and still pulls well under hard acceleration. It only does it when it's been parked up. Even if I leave it an hour and start it as soon as I put my foot down it dies and then it's a bit hard to start. Seems to have air which if it's just ticking over it will clear itself.

sounds like you are getting air in ,when stood ,pump will self bleed itself after its been running a little while but it isnt good for pump to do this, check leak off pipes ,lift pump .filters tight, pipe work etc

Ok thanks for that, would it show as a leak somewhere

its a good idea to put in a clear plastic pipe in between filter and front banjo bolt on injection pump ,any bubbles running through it at idler or higher revs require source locating

Ok thanks again I'll have a look at that.looks like it's going to be hard to find.

Ok cheers rob.I've had all new injectors and had my pump reconditioned by a top man in wellingborough. I'm going to take lift pump off and take it back and get an exchange as it's only 6 months old and see if that changes anything. I'll pm you and let you know how it goes. It's a problem when they don't run right. Thanks again.

Thankyou turned out to be a very small split in a leak off pipe. Hard to find but fixed. Thanks again
