Have searched the forum to no avail. What's the difference between both engines and how can you visually tell from the exterior? Also what are the pros and cons of each?

Thanks

The easiest way to distinguish between them is, a 200 will have two v belts running the fan power steering etc. A 300 has a single multi V serpentine belt.

The biggest difference between the two engines IMO is the 200 has a steel head ware as the 300 is aluminium, making it more susceptible to overheating problems IMO .

Thanks. So you can't tell from a picture of just the exterior or age of the disco? Looking at a 97 P Disco and the current owner isn't sure.

If it's a genuine 1st 1997 then it's definitely a TDi 300 - no question about it

TDi 200 finished production back end of 1993.

200s have square wing mirrors, 300s are rounded. Also head lights and grills are different in them both google images to see the difference

And 200's have mg metro style dash whereas 300's have a more modern style dash but as said a 97 will deffo be a 300
