Don't shoot me but

As with the RR 4.6, you only hear the bad news

Has anyone been happy to with their 1.8 Freelander?

At present they are available at less than £1000 for what looks like a good car.
If the car is cheap enough is it still worth buying and repairing as a project car.
I have restored cars in the past so I don't mind doing it again

Thank's Fred

yes me!!!!!!

Well i am now... was not so happy two months ago when my head gasket went.

But it's repaired now and it's fookin mint.

Edit: diesels are gay. :D

Thank's for the reply crewebiker,
Did you have the thermostat mod done at the same time?

The reason I ask is my wife wants me to look at a 2000 Xei 1.8 on Tuesday so I am trying to get as much info as possible

I have 2 1.8s.

The 1st I bought new in 2003 ('cos that's what my tax person told me to do) & now has 75,000 miles on the clock & apart from needing a new fuel pump at 60,000 miles has behaved itself.

The 2nd I have just bought, cost 1000 pounds, is a '98 & has 92,000 miles with a FSH. The head gasket was done about 10,000 miles ago & frankly if it blows itself to pieces in the next month or so I will still have made a profit on parts for No1.

If both give up the ghost at the same time I will be forced to throw a couple of grand at Minister engines & expect to get at least 150 bhp back for my money & some leary cam covers.

Ok, that won't make the recipient a Lotus but it will amuse me when I open the bonnet & check the fluids.

Thank's Tony
The car my wife want's me to look at is a 2000 Xei with FSH and about the same price as your second car.
I don't expect it to be perfect but it seems good value to me and I will have money left to allow for repairs.

Most of the cars I saw for sale at the same age (ish) were 2 grand or so. 1 was 1500 & had done 124k miles with a history nobody was sure off. The other 2 in my area needed 1, a new gearbox - yours for 500 quid or 2, a new head gasket, yours for 600 quid.

The 1 I bought was up for 1150 & had 600 quid spent on a new head, head gasket, inlet gaskets etc etc about 18 months ago.

Bear in mind that the newer the car the better the head gasket is sorted & your grand for a 2000 car sounds like a very fair price.

Oh & just to show how much faith I have in these things I intend to collect my 2nd 1 on Tuesday & drive it straight to it's new home Germany ('cos there is a good reason for my loggin) which should be about a 14 hour thrash including the German autobahns at night & when it will almost certainly be raining. & very cold.

I have no need to try out the thing's top speed. I already know that my 1st Freelander can do about 110 mph. For about 3 hours. Why only 3? That's when it needs more fuel.

At £500 nearly 2 years aggo with a blown HG,but only 55k and a decent spec I think it was a bargain.Does everything except tow, excellent in the snow, goes well up the woods and is comfy.Shame its not an auto.;)

yes i am happy with my 1.8 k series, but only because i work on it myself, i would not wish to pay main dealer repair charges,

no i didn't have the thermo mod done... couldn't afford it as well at the time.

but will be getting it done in the next few months along with a few other bits and peices that probably won't need doing but i'll replace anyway such as the fuel filters etc. May also get a new coolant bottle with the sensors built in.

love my freelander 1.8 new from 2002 when my parents bought it (i bought it for £1000 off them) it has had no problems other than the exhaust rusting through and the occasional clonkin noise and its done 136,000 miles and drives great. :D even after 4 months playing rugby in south africa and it just sitting there with no use its fine. :D

Love it just got a 99 5 door 1.8 xei it's had the mods done so should be no probs changed from a mondeo wouldnt go back!!!:D did however buy a pajero on sat and it now up for sale what a pile of jap c**p:doh: ! Give me a freelander anytime:)

Glad to hear some are happy with the Freelander.

My wife want's one by September, and by expeience what she wants she gets. (Or else)

Thanks for your replies
