I have just completed 90000 miles in my Freelander and am beginning to think about changing cars. The 90000 miles have been totally trouble free, apart from a split turbo hose a few weeks back. So I have been absolutely chuffed with this car. I am now hearing increased road noise, I assume from lots of moving shafts and bearings. Is this normal for a Freelander of this age?

I said to my wife when we bought the car that I would be happy if the car lasted us 10 years, we are now at 9 years 3 months and I am wondering whether I should start looking around.

I am always reluctant to get rid of something that still does the job.

hi, i am on 186000 (TD4) and still going strong although it's had a few quid spent on it over the last 18 months.
If yours is trouble free and still does the job i would keep hold of it and keep your money until things start to go wrong then get rid this is what i would do.
 
Hello my TD4 is on 143,000, having just spent £500.00 on it in the last 12-18 months. It is currently running well if a bit noisy. It is used daily for road runs and 1-2 month on green lanes.
 
There are those who say that 90k is about when everything is run in nicely on a frelander :D.

Hi Norm,

I'm assumimg this is a diesel - so in my book the engine is just nicely 'ran-in'.

The things you can expect to replace are the VCU mount/bearings, probably also the VCU itself, fuel-pump and the MAF.

None of these are horrendously expensive - certainly cheaper than changing vehicle.

The noise you are getting at the moment is more than likely the VCU bearings - the front one usually goes first as more 'road'crud' gets thrown at it.

My TD4 has only done 102K and I'm hoping to get at least the same again from it.

Enjoy it - there isn't really a suitable equivalent / replacement at the moment anyway INHO. ;)

This TD4 has been exceptional in reliability, tows my caravan as though it was not there.

I am 65 and pensions do not allow for large expenses, keeping this car makes financial sense.

I shall just turn up the radio until the noise gets to be too much.

After 9 years, how much longer can I expect the battery and exhaust pipe to last....for goodness sake...9 years!

I would have thought that if the battery is nine years old then it's due to expire any day now
 
mine has just gone to 103k and is strong as the day it was built.

and it's a petrol..................................not one of them slow smokey doozles :)
 
My freeby is 8 years old with 73k on it, original battery and exhaust etc.

The bearings can be changed for £120. £40 for decent GKN bearings from Foundry 4x4, and £80 for labour from a garage.

Otherwise, i would check the VCU, it could be due a change and you dont want to ignore that as it will get expensive. Bell engineering are your best bet for getting that changed for a proper one that will last many miles.

Otherwise, keep it well maintained and there is no reason for it not to cover 150k or more.
 
Your road noise may just be down to the tyres. How much tread do you have all round and do they have even wear?
 
mine old one was 173000 never changed the battery only back box was changed on exhaust changed the vcu and had a bit of work done on the auto gearbox but put that down to the vcu hope I get the same out of my newer one td4 auto hse 2006 modle
 
Mine has just hit 10 years old and 125000, original battery was changed at 105k, clutch last week and the exhaust is still the original but i did have a bracket welded back on this week, garage said the exhaust was to good to consider replacing:D
 
The VCU should be changed every 70k miles so DO change the VCU and use quality bearings NOT Britpart ones. It is a simple fairly quick job to do. If you do not change it, the IRD and rear diff will start to cause problems and that will be expensive. If you change the VCU and bearings now then you will prevent more costly repairs. Don't ignore it or you will pay....

It may not be your noise source but it must be done for another 70k trouble free miles.

Talk to Bell Engineering about it.:cool:

My 98Lseries has done 192,000 miles .I'm quite sure the vcu is the original .I have owned it for nearly 7 years and covered 70,000 miles .

Well, it depends how many of the miles were done on the back of a recovery truck ;) :D
