i have just spent a few hours trying to change the door handles and locks on my defender 110. have managed to get the old push button door handle off and a new one on. and this is where the trouble started. the key barrel is in and the rods are all connected. it looks ok. But when i lock with the key, it works but it unlocks before releasing the key. the mechanism has not been changed just the handle and key barrel. and yes i have been using the new key and not the old one before i ger any sarcastic replies. if anyone has any ideas i'd appreciate the help.

So what your saying is, you can't turn the key back to the upright position to take it out without it unlocking?

Not sure what thats about, does that on my back door, and I just gave up and lock it from the inside now... but you can't really do this.

Its almost as if the barrel is sitting at the wrong angle, so when your using it, it has to unlock to get back to the right angle, but I don't think it matters what way these go in!

yeah thats the problem, i've tried the lock both ways up and still the same trouble. not quite sure what to do but may try going to bearmach and picking their brains unless someone solves it tonight. fingers crossed

Yea, its a real pain, it would appear that there should be something that will let the key twist and come out, without it moving the little lug that locks the lock at the same time.

If you get an answer I would be very intrested to find the cure.

turn the barrel round a bit, after you have fitted it, it should turn to lock it in position, i think ;)

it appears that the whole trouble has been caused by the lack of precision in making the parts!!! i have to wait till monday as the nice man in the shop gave me the wrong side handle after i went in and explained my problem. once i have the new correct part it looks like a bit of filing and removal of excess metal should solve the problem. the key barrel and lengthener that screws in to the arm need to be able to move freely, unlike i origionally thought. the play mean that the key rotates to move the are to lock/unlock and can also return to the central point without unlocking/locking. simple once it makes sense. and if it works i'll be even happier, had to tak a metal plate over the hole wher the door handle was till monday.
