Hi guys, my IRD is busted and im planning on stripping it and repairing/refurbing as appropriate.
My question is on ebay theres loads of kits, bearings seals pinions etc etc, does anyone know what quality they are ? any particular seller that's good....or bad ??
Also im only im FWD only so are there any parts I simply don't need to repair or can leave off such as the prop pinion and fit a blanking plate ?
All help appreciated and thanks in advance, Dave

The kits I've seen appear to be good quality. Why FWD only? Would you not be better off with a Mondeo?

The reason its FWD only is it simply was that way when I bought it for the Mrs. 4x4 was not really needed, she had just owned a little pug 206 hdi but it suffered a total brake failure one day. I repaired it (master cylinder) but she had lost all confidence in it and asked for something physically bigger like my disco (300 tdi). she did not like the piccasso or scenic Meganne type cars......so bought her the lil hippo for its size as it gave her more confidence again. I got it cheap but with issues....3 amigos (cured abs bypass) fitted EGR blanking kit and de-catted exhaust and ran it on bio diesel. All was good getting nearly 40MPG and quite nippy, then on thurs afto bang and lost all drive.

Hence my need for an IRD or a rebuild, I asked about FWD refurb only as I noticed bell engineering offer a FWD only rebuild/exchange unit for £350.....full 4x4 units are £615.

My IRD has busted the diff but has not damaged the casing........ ideas...suggestions ??
Thanx in advance for any input.

PS... are 1.8 petrol gearboxes exactly the same...or is it that they fit but have different ratios....same with IRD off 1.8...exactly same or near enuff ?

Not necessarily the IRD, could be the L/H output shaft connector spline in the gearbox. same symptoms as diff fault except I would have thought diff would mangle internals of ird with bits finding their way out. Have you checked for bits on the magnetic drain plug? Don't forget to undo the filler level plug before draining IRD, they can be a b**** to undo.
Difficult to diagnose otherwise but IRD needs to come out anyway if its either way.

Thanx freetaz, dint consider the geabox. Will have the lot out by Tuesday tea time and will have some deff diagnosis by then, so guessing gunna get more expensive as will have to put a new clutch in as its silly not to at that point.

Don't go further than pulling out IRD till you're sure.

Once you have IRD out you can check the connector spline in place in the gearbox, might also need to pull the L/H driveshaft for a better view. there's a recent post with pics (from matt1295 I think)of the problem, will post details when I find it

Thread is called "Dead dead car"

Hi freetaz, read that thread and its certainly food for thought. My mrs freelander is or was front wheel drive only (now no wheel drive) as the prop and VCU were simply missing when I bought her the car. That does not mean the probs not the same tho, guess its spanner time and out the IRD and have a peek. Be nice if its a gearbox failure as that's a much cheaper option.... but my gut is screaming IRD. Gunna ring bell this morning and see what they say as they do a reconditioned IRD with a warranty that FWD only.

did i read my name lol

not my problem mate i was just quick enough to find a picture that might be some help to you my friend and i hope you sort it out soon....

would it not also be easy to take the N.S shaft out before the the IRD just coz its less work even tho i no the IRD has to come out but if you can see splines gone from NS least u can get sumat sorted while taking the IRD out its only a ball joint hub bolt and pry it out on the NS

I agree, but the spline in question will still be in place, making it difficult to say for sure.

UPDATE......
Removed IRD and its all stripped gears, sloppy bearings throughout and one very smashed up DIFF. It literally fell out of the end cover when unbolted in pieces on floor.
On good side the casing was intact as was the heat exchange
SO........ today fetched a recon exchange IRD from bell engineering.
Gearbox is still fitted but gunna pull it off to inspect closer but it appears ok, while its off gunna fit a new clutch to. All new fluids etc etc and hopefully that's it back to tip top....... fingers crossed.
