Hi I have just done a clutch change on a 2001 freelanderTD4. However when I put the IRD back in, attach
both front half shafts and run the engine the front right shaft does not turn. The left turns and works as expected. It is the right side with no drive not left as i put in the heading.
The drive to the rear works fine but i have no drive to the front right. I have not got oil in the gearbox or ird. I have
just turned over and run for 10 seconds to check the drive. I have not put on the front subframe or wishbones
or wheels. If i put eveything back together will i get drive to all wheels as im usure how the ird works or is something wrong.
Can somebody give me some advise.

The IRD contains the front diff. So with the rear wheels on the ground and a gear selected (engine off). The fronts should turn in opposite directions when turned by hand. If the front right is free, then it's an internal fault in the IRD.

Hi many thanks for the reply. The rear prop shaft is not connected back up yet. When i turn the front wheels by hand they rotate in opposite directs as you said.
However when i engage a gear the left and rear rotate but not the right. Do I put everything back together and hope everything is ok or do i pull it apart again. This might help. i have a spare IRD and i also put this one it to test and it was the same result.

When you engage a gear, are you talking about with the wheel in the air.?If so it may just be that the diff is favouring one side.
You need to load the left and see if the right starts to turn.

That sounds like your diff favouring one side, as above. You could try slowing the left side down with a rag - the right should start to turn but I would just build it all back up and road test. Don't run it too much without oil in, though!

Many thanks all for your help. I put the wheels and tyres on and put load on the left with the wheels off the ground. Once there was a load placed on the
left wheel the right started rotating. the diff favoured the left but the right engaged, so all is good. will rebuild the rest tomorrow.
cheers guys
