Hi everybody.
After 3 days working non stop we succeed to change the clutch of the freelander i just bought (i knew the problem before ^^) Very cheap, nice motor i was perfect for me.
The thing is that we ****ed up... We forced to much to put de ird inside the gearbox and the little tooth of metal that are inside the gearbox are deformed... I think those who have done this can imagine how it could happen. The teeth are not si pyramidal but a little bit smashed (don t know if it s the good word...)
Also the "male" of the IRD with the star, just the end part, the little one, now moves a little bit up to down. is it normal or we ****ed up this part also??

What could we do? Could we use the IRD like this ?( i don t know if it s normal that it can moves a little bit...)


Is it possible to change to pignon inside the gearbox (female part) without opening the gearbox?
Is it possible to change the pignon (the male part on the ird) and more od all, is it easy to do ( i have see some picture of IRD with all the parts next to it.. seems not to be so so crazy)
The better would be change IRD and gearbox all? let s see what you think.

Nous avons malheureusement abimé le pignon d entrée de boite ou rentre l IRD.
Quelqu un saurait si il est possible de demonter les pignons d'entrée de boite dans la boite et celui de l IRD.
Est ce qu il vaudrait mieux changer la boite et l IRD directement?
Sachant que sur l IRD la seule partie abimée est le bout du bout du pignon qui bouge un peu de haut en bas, la tete du pignon elle est rattrapable.

Post up the photos and we will see how bad it looks. Maybe if you take the IRD out again, you can clean up the ends of the splines with a file? No, I don't think you can change the female splined part in the gearbox without opening the gearbox. I don't really understand the bit about having play in the IRD shaft, because when it is fitted into the gearbox, you can't reach it?

But if it is you didn t understand how it happened... two people very tired at 2 O clock in the morning... after 6 hours "putting" the gearbox in her place... and we suceed the gearbox. :D

The picture doesn't work. Which shafts are damaged? As there are 2 sticking out the end of the IRD. I actually can't see how you can damage a hardened steel shaft, simply by pushing it in incorrectly? :confused:

I can see the picture OK. I'm afraid the damage to the inner spline does appear quite bad. Hard to see in the photo, but I think it is quite bad. Do you have a photo of the male spline too? Is that similarly damaged?
The bit I couldn't understand, was how you could measure the play, because when both boxes are bolted together, it is not possible to reach the shaft to move it up and down to check for play.

Photo worked OK for me, but hard to see properly. I THINK the teeth of the smaller female spline have been bashed quite hard, just at the lead-in chamfer.
 
I checked the shaft on my spare IRD today and it has a very small amount of movement when you wiggle the shaft, the leading edge of the shaft you should be able to file the grooves back in line so that it will mesh with the gearbox ok

Other little questions, the small metal sheet that go on the top of the IRD is it very important? because i don t have it...
Ohh.. and the oil pressure thing (the little tube connect on the IRD) for the 1rst was totaly disconnect, what are the consequence of this?

Do you mean the mass damper? Got a picture?

The little pipe at the top is the breather, and is supposed to be left open to the air. The rubber pipe should join a metal pipe, which is bent downward at the top.

So i don t think it is. No i speak about a metal sheet very thin. The mecanic guy told me it s in order that the hot of the motor don t heat to much the IRD... then on internet I saw that a lot of IRD don t have it... maybe it s only on td4 diesel... don t know.
I m looking for a new gearbox (cheap if it s possible)... i saw some for 400 euros... let s see the options...
Does someone has got the plan of the gearbox? like a Manual of the gearbox? (maybe we open it and try to change this part... i mean we wouldnt have nothing to loose if then we change it...

There is a round aluminium disc with two pipes coming off it at the end of the IRD nearest the gearbox. This is a cooler and the two pipes are connected to the engine's cooling system. In Winter, it warms the oil in the IRD as the water in the cooling system heats up. In Summer, it cools the oil in the IRD to stop it getting much above 100 degrees. Is it the one that is numbered 45A or 45B in the drawing below?

If you can find a scrap IRD, I think I would try to take the two input shafts out of it and just try to gently insert them into your gearbox so that you can check that you haven't damaged the female splines in the gearbox before you try re-fitting the IRD.
 
To do any damage to that spline you must not have had it lined up properly and you must have been ramming it in with another car! I always lock the gearbox in 4th when putting an IRD on and grease the IRD shaft so the splines can slip into the gearbox nice and easy (Ooo Matron) Any ways try my suggestion but if its fuked then its fuked...
 
The thin metal sheet he's talking about is the horizontal heat shield that sits on top of the ird, at the rear, in front of the pinion.

Hmmmm.... Don't remember seeing one of those under mine!
There isn't one on mine either. They fall off as they corrode, or just don't get put back on after work has been done. It's only a heat shield, and serves no other purpose.
 
Heat shield above the ird. A rare treat for thems who don't have one.

The TD4 exhaust isn't as close to the prop front CV as the V6 exhaust, also the exhaust gas from a turbo diesel isn't as hot as a V6, so there's not so much of a need for a heat shield. There aren't any heat shields fitted to the floor of a TD4, like there are on the V6, again due to the lower temperature of the exhaust pipe.

In reality i was looking for the same plan but for the gearbox. I ll try to fix the IRD in the gearbox and if it don t work change the gearbox...
Also the mekanik people next to me says me it is not a super 4x4... there are some little stuff to do in order in don t break so quick? I live in a place with 13 km of off road! and i had this plan of freelander very cheap... I don t know if i follow this way fixing the freelander or if i just change 4x4 already.. :confused: I am afraid to have to fix again something in 6months... what i should do?
I don t want to look for others pieces all the time neither...

The Freelander 1 is a reasonably reliable 4x4. There are known problems like the VCU Viscous Coupling Unit which needs replaced when it starts to stiffen up. We have a test called the OWUT One Wheel Up Test, to test your vcu to see if it needs replaced or it's ok. You also need to have 4x tires the same size/make/model. If they have different depths of thread then the tires with the deeper treat should be fitted to the rear wheels. Follow the links in my signature below for the OWUT vcu test method.
