Hi,
can anyone tell me the prupose of an IRD blanking plate please?
Complete prop now removed for the summer, and there is a nasty noise (like a resonance) only under hard acceleration / heavy engine load.

I've had this a couple of times in the past when the prop has been off for bearings, VCU etc, and the noise goes away when the prop is replaced.
So by my calculation, when the IRD has no load on its rear output shaft it rattles.

I'm guessing at some kind of internal wear within the IRD, although it all works perfectly in 4WD, no knocks, rumbles etc.
Not too worried about this, but wondering what a blanking plate does.
I think that the drive flange is still attached to the IRD output shaft.

the drive pinion is still attached take the 5 nuts off and you wll have a hole to fill , i made my own or you can buy them on ebay
 
Most probably is a torsional oscillation in the output drive train. This is superimposed on the normal rotation of the parts. The noise arises when the clearance is crossed and the teeth bang together. Removing the IRD output shaft/pinion reduces the system inertia and raises the oscillating frequency. This in turn reduces the amplitude and the noise. You will then of course require the blanking plate to seal the IRD.

Does the blanking plate just prevent the ingress of dirt into the output area, or does it retain the oil as well? ie, will i need a gasket too?
Sorry to seem like a numpte, but i'm not familiar with the drive train on the FL.

you will need instant gasket buy the plate on ebay , its self explanatory , im a painter and made up my own plate , its that easy ,
 
There shouldn't be any additional noise when the prop is off,

I'd say the pinion bearing has gone and you have excess clatter

Cant see the point in blanking plates tbh, just leaving the pinion free spinning works perfectly well
