hi, Our car is a Freelander td4 2003. Car was running under power, it went on diagnostics and showed nothing, so sent it in for a service where all filters were replaced etc,the car was returned and was running perfect for around 3 days (30-40 miles) parked up for a few minutes, tried to re start it and it would turn over but not fire up, left it for maybe 10 minutes and it started fine, pulling properly no problemsÂ…Â….. over 3-4 days this happened a few more times with no rhyme or reason as to when and where, this afternoon while being driven by my wife it would briefly (under load) lose all power only for it to return and she limped it to work for about a mile, a mechanic friend came to take the car away and it started up fine and drove fine barring one instance on a hill,he has just called and can't start it. anyone have any ideas? i know theres a thread with a lack of power issue, but none sound the same as this. help!! its got to get me from Cornwall to Gatwick Wednesday so any prompt replies would be appreciated.:confused:
 
Check the low pressure fuel pump is running just in front of drivers side rear wheel arch and also change the filter next to it if it has never been changed.
 
Thanks for your time, The pump was checked and a new filter was fitted on the service.
 
As mentioned, the lack of power and the starting issue is intermittent, it will drive and start fine then without any reason lose power, would it be the immobiliser on the starting issue and something else causing the random power loss?
 
would be looking at cam sensor, and possible injectors, leak back test will prove/disprove injectors, also possible fuel pump failure.

when it does it again, turn the ignition on all the way but do not start, listen for the pump to be running, can hear it in the back seat.
 
Thank you Optimus, my mechanic is open to any advice, the diagnostics kit that he's got isn't showing anything and theres no engine management lights on either., there is a place called Tredown land rovers locally who we called and they immediately suggested replacing the turbo which i thought was a bit extreme, so i've posted on here to see if it could be an easy fix first.

Bit of a long shot, but bacterial growth in the fuel tank if you don't keep it full can also cause a problem. Seen a few diesels suffering from it. A lot of duff diesel with high water content can also do it.
 
Do you use morrisons fuel? Have come across several issues with diesel and morrisons....
 
Check the condition of the breather pipes and the mesh filter (I can never remember the name) or replace it with the BMW separator type.

Thanks for the advice mjrimmer, the pump had an intermittent fault, so was hard to diagnose.all sorted now thanks.
