Hi There

I'm new to the site, so please excuse me if this questuion has been answered several times before.

I have a 96 Disco V8i....Starter Motor was replaced with new unit last February.

Since June or so...intermittently....turning the starter key does not engage the starter motor...whne this happens if I wait about a minute or so, it starts fine.

For what its worth...

  • Even when it won't turn over....I get all standard lights on dash and electrics work fine.
  • It always starts first time from cold, or if its been sitting for a few hours.
  • I replaced the ignition barrel about three years back, but problen only started occuring in June. Seems to dissappear for a few weeks, then return.

Is this a known issue, am I better to start looking a the ignition switch end or starter motor end...or anywhere else in between?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

check the earth strap on the engine, there is one at the rear by the starter, this was the problem with mine ;)

take the earth strap off, clean up the area with a wire brush , dont forget to clean the terminal too, then refit it ;)

You could check the immobiliser spider - its a black box containing some electronics and relays, buried in the dash - they are notorious for having bad solder joints and can affect starter, ignition and fuel pump on petrol models, also the fuel cut off solenoid on diesels. A google or dig round here should get the info you need, it's a hours work to pull the middle of the dash and replace with a link that LR made to take it out of circuit (they are that bad!) the part number is AMR4956.

Good luck!

I have a half second delay with mine from turning the key all the way and the starter motor kicking in. It has done this since I got it and has never changed. Should I be worried?
