Earlier this year I had an intermittent starting problem on my l322. Occasionally when attempting to start the car from cold the car would not turn over at all. It was almost like having a dead battery but the stereo, steering wheel adjustment etc fired as usual but the final turn of the key did nothing apart from hearing a click. If I sat there for 20 mins, occasionally trying, it would start fine as if nothing was wrong.

Researching the problem led me to replace part YXB000080 which is part of the ignition barrel. The problem was solved straight away and I thought I solved the issue.

Fast forward 4 months and the car has started doing the same problem again, this time almost every time I start the car from cold. Same as last time, if I sit in the car for 20 mins and keep trying it starts up just fine. I can then use the car stopping/starting throughout the day without any problems at all.

Does anyone know what this could be? I can replace the part again even though it was a pain to do, but I am unsure if something is causing it to break or whether its part of a larger issue. Also I could have sworn the alarm used to go off when i tried starting the car after locking myself in it. It no longer does this. The battery is about 3 years old but doesn't seem to be suspicious as when the car starts eventually it springs to life rather than struggles to start.

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks both. Finally got some free time today. Battery connections and starter motor connections seem fine. No obd codes and can't check lr specific ones as my reader refuses to connect. Strange thing I have noticed though, when refusing to start it occasionally shows "-25" on the dash. It then showed "-75" on the dash the other day when it started ok. Any idea what this is? Never seen it before.

You could have a look through the hidden menus to see if it relates to anything.

Mine did a weird thing after it's was towed onto a lorry the other day and the battery went flat. When I tried to jump it I had the message pop up on the dash saying transfer box neutral or something similar and it just did the clunk noise when I tried to start so I cycled the high low ratio and it started fine.
I am wondering if a low battery condition or slightly faulty transfer box motor or gear selector switch could be related. You could try changing through the gears if it does it again and then the transfer box to see if anything helps which might narrow down your search.

It could still just be a tired starter motor or low battery though.

If you have the Vogue ,do you have the correct battery? I speak from experience of multiple battery changes (all under warranty) in 3 years.
yes tbh the one what lasted longest was a varta silver powerframe thought it had 5 years warranty considering it was 135 quid ish but shop didnt think so, said it was 3 years, had some other known brand from a well known factors & that was total c**p failed this morning less than 6 months old so im on another brand now hopefully this will hold out its 2 years warranty

That's odd as most batteries I've seen have a 5yr warranty. When I asked about the 'right' battery I meant specs rather than brand but if you've got the right specs 6 months is a bit shoddy.

Still having the same issue so decided to start throwing money at it again and will replace the battery. Its actually over 4 years old now so guessing it probably needs replacing anyway given the amount of gadgets it powers over a normal car?

Any idea of which battery is best to go for? Or at least best bang of buck?

There's a recent thread on exactly those issues. It should be easy to find, using the search bar, as it's been on the front page in at least the last fortnight.

I've checked the first 10 pages. I think its a different problem where the ignition key wouldn't physically turn. Mine turns fine, just doesn't fire up. Unless its a different thread you mean?

Nope, there are two recent conversations, with discussions about which battery to get. Including make, warranty, size, etc. Maybe try a different search term? Sometimes it depends what you put in the search bar.

Hi
Did you ever get this problem solved as I have got exactly the same issue
Car in garage in pieces and my mechanic is at a loss as to what’s wrong

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul, have you ever received an answer to this issue ? I have exactly the same problem. Appreciate your response

If your hearing a click click when turning the key ,id say its a worn starter motor ,brushes ,try gently tapping the starter while someone try's the key, if no joy with that ,like said before earth on chasse is a fail point try earthling the engine with a jump lead to the body ;)
