Hi All my d2 td5 has started intermittently misfiring whether cold or hot.

It shakes violently and produces large amounts of blue smoke.

So far if I pull over switch off wait a few minutes then restart it's fine.

After about 1000 miles I've checked the ecu plug etc very clean no oil traces, replaced the injector loom under the rocker cover and replaced the exhaust manifold gaskets.

And after a lot of trying to make it do it I think it happened today as a result of putting my foot to the floor whilst in the lock out gear going up a hill on the motorway!! It only seems to do it at higher speeds in the lock out gear.

Can anyone help or shed any light on this please?

Ok I thought so I will start with the filter in that case.

Why the misfire and the blue smoke though?

how old is the injector loom? this can cause rough running, also don't put a cheap fuel filter on

The O-ring which seals it in the head fails and allows oil to creep down the wires to the ECU by capillary action - check the red ecu plug for signs of oil.

If there's oil there, replace the injector loom, and flush out the cabling to the ecu & plug with switch cleaner - repeatedly. You might need to do this a few times over some time as the remaining oil draws out of the cabling.

Have replaced the injector loom as a precaution, plugs on ECU are dry as a bone.

Can't smell any diesel in oil and had Keith gotts check it they said no diesel in oil!!!

Will replace fuel filter with a genuine one but havnt got a clue what else could be causing it?

Do the contacts go on the actual injectors themselves?

Found a fair bit of what looked like water in the filter when I changed it yesterday. Stuck the new filter on filled it with clean diesel as per manual etc and now fuel pump primes constant when ignition is left on?? Engine runs fine and drives absolutely no problems. In fact I think this was the cause for the so called mis fire as did 100 miles of varied driving today with no problem at all.

Except in true Land Rover style fixed one problem and we now have another to replace it! I'm guessing this is air in the system causing the pump to not get up to the right pressure?

Try the air bleed valve.its on the fuel filter head, its the rear outer pipe connection.its about a tenner for a new one.they have a very fine membrane inside.if its cacked up or been removed it wont help your situation.

Some injector not work properly , you must put the vehicle on diagnostic equipment and check every injector fuel value. The blue smoke is usualy problem with the fuel. I have a problem with the white smoke and the problem was the heather of EGR valve.

Does anyone locally have access to nano com etc? I'm in hook Hampshire.

I think it is injector related as yesterday after thinking it was all sorted it did it again but this time from cold and as soon as I started it up.

plugged the disco into snap on solus pro and it came up with the following current faults:

.6 air flow circuit fault
20 air flow circuit fault
45 temp gauge short circuit fault
139 injector 5 open circuit

cleared them down and the only one left is the 139.

injector loom replaced, fuel filter replaced, no oil in engine loom or ecu.

found a little pattern in that when left on a hill it then runs rough misfire etc blue smoke, then when returned to a flat surface and switched off then on its fine again?

Could this be fuel pump related?

I would check that the injector loom is correctly plugged onto no.5 injector, had a similar prob at work when a customer replaced his own loom, if not sounds like your going to be wanting an injector

Continuity check the wiring of the main loom for that injector too.
