My Freelander 2 TDS engine started to whine during acceleration. After a short while the power steering began to get heavy at low revs. Power steering pump changed. This had no affect. However, the heaviness of the power steering increased and the also the frequency. Second pump fitted and still no better.

Any clues as to the reason?

Thanks

Did you also change the power steering reservoir, it as a built in filter which cannot be changed, so could be restricting the flow of fluid? they are cheap enough.

Does sound like its beeing starved of fluid? Not all new pumps are to be trusted.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. No the reservoir wasn't changed. I will have a look at that.

A very rare problem when I had heavy power steering and engine whine. My alternator pulley fell off which the Land Rover garage said was quite common on my FL2. However the drive belt flicked up and landed back on the spindle where the pulley fell off which is so rare it was probably non existent before me haha . Because the drive belt fell back on the spindle with far less tention, I got hone from being in Saint Albans to Leicester. I actually heard a loud bang at the M1 near Luton, where it obviously flew off haha as I got off the M1 at Fosse Park Leicester, going round the roundabout I was hearing loud whine and the steering wheel was juddering.
If the belt didn't land back on the spindle I would have broken down as it would have been all chewed up into bits. I was very lucky!
I have a 2007 FL2, I've completed 218,000 in it and never broken down. Great vehicle 👌 👏 👍 🙌 😀
