Hello! I am looking for some LR Help! This forum seem the place to get it!:D
I have a Freelander V6 2004 and have been experiencing starting problems for the past 3 weeks. I always manage to get it started but it takes anywhere from 1 to 25 minutes before the starter engages and the car starts.
Symptoms:
•When I turn the key to crank the starter, nothing happens apart from the clicking of the relay in the fuse box below the steering wheel and the dimming of the digital clock on the center of the dash.:(
•After anywhere from 2 to 200 consecutive tries, the starter engages and the motor fires up right away.
•On a few occasions I can here the starter clutch start to engage but the main starter doesnt follow.
•Seems to take less time to start when the weather is above 10 deg celcius.
•I've had battery issues this winter, and have had to boost the car on a few occasions when the temperature dipped below -15 deg.
All ready checked:
Battery is tested and fine. Same with pole connectors...
I can hear the humming of the fuel pump when I crank.
Went to a LR jobber garage this morning and is suggesting we take out the starter and see if thats the problem... He figures 4-6 hours just to check at $60 an hour!
Tested the relays in the fuse box under the hood and says they are all fine.

Thats pretty much the best description of the problem I am experiencing right now.... First time I have problems with the car, and its a shame. We have had big winter with tons of snow this year, and I must say this truck with a good set of winter tires is phenomenal in the snow. This starter problem is ****ing the **** out of me, since every time I have to put in gas, I end up stalling at the pump because the fuel cover needs the ignition key to open....

S.O.S!!!

are you absolutely sure that the battery is OK? it very much sounds like a battery issue to me. try swapping the battery with a known good one (borrow one).
if it's not that, then yes, I'd suspect the starter motor.

yeah the battery tested out ok this am. Not in top tune shape but good. But you have me doubting now...
If the battery was bad, wouldn't It not start at all? Even after cranking it till the end of time?
I tried boosting it a couple times when it didn't start and I experienced the same problem. Nothing going on.... except that click and the damn clock dimming!

check all connections between the batery and the starter and all the earths - battery to chassis and engine to chassis.

Im going to try giving the fuse box under the hood a good cleaning.
We have had a lot of water on the roads with all the snow melting, and I did fly through a couple decent puddles on a few occasions.
The box is to say the least "dusty":D

Im seeing a lot about the cam sensor ignition posts on this forum, but they seems to be cold/hot start related problem... Hot or Cold I experience the same problem.... the only thing that seems to make a difference is the outside temperature. The warmer the better. But I never get to start the car normally, with only one crank! Or maybe i'm just having better luck when the sun is out!!!

make sure yu clean the connections under the fusebox - they are known to corrode and cause intermittent failure.

ok. Should I pull out the fuse box to give it a good clean?
How about spraying a little wd40? Maybe not a good idea...

All right. Im going to head home now and try that later tonight.
I Wonder how many times its going to take to start the car now?
Place your bets...

Thanks to all for your help. I'll let you know if I get any luck...

Made it home with 2 pit stops.
Out of the office : 11 deg cel - 12 attempts before starting.
Stop 1: Gas at $1.28 Litre : 6 deg - 2 attempts
Stop 2: Beer at $5 the litre : 4 deg - 14 attemps before the starter cranked.

Cleaned the fuse box, with contact cleaner, inside and under. brushed the 150AMP fuse starter circuit clean. Re assembled everything.
With the car in a heated garage - took a good 50+ times to finally crank and start!

Checked the battery to chassis ground connection and it is fine. Not sure where the motor to chassis connection is... Id appreciate if you could guide me where to find it.

I want to exhaust all the options before having the starter taken off and checked... and the hefty bill that goes with it.

Is there a way to make a starter diagnostic without removing it from the engine? How about if I connect it like a remote car starter and fire it directly? If that works 20 times in a row, that would mean the starter would be fine no???

Any other things I should look into?

had a similar prob on mine, turns out it was the thin wire that connects to the starter (for sollenoid i think) i cleaned the spade terminal and greased it,job done 6 month later still no brobs

Hi
I had this problem and I found it was the small wire on the end of the solanoid, the push on connector had rusted and causing a bad connection,
all I did was to cut off the old connector and crimp on a new one no futher problems, starts first time, hope this helps.
